yes, its so American, it needs like $5 billion dollars of tax payer money to stay solvent. Good old American company, only staying afloat because the government is subsidizing it.
 
Also, the late 70's Charger was no gem.

maybe it wasnt, but you could still get one with a big block in it into the late 70s. And NASCAR was still using the Charger in the 70s and two '76s competed at LeMans.

the real destruction of the Charger line didnt happen until the 80s.

I'm a bit hesitant to actually own a Tesla because there is just a bit too much of the Computer being in control without any actual manual overrides, even the doors, better hope the computer lets them open.

They are amazing vehicles.

But if you have an instinctive distrust of letting computers be more in control than you or of governments/corporations then they will give you some serious pause. Not to mention, the Teslas are like the ultimate data logging machines, they are constantly recording every little thing and storing / transmitting it.

Have doubts that Tesla outsmarted any traditional car manufacturer when it comes to making car shells by the milion. At present Tesla car manufacturing is more akin to some 70s designed Russian car with plenty of hand rework and quality issues than any of the mayor players.

I drive the company truck 150-200 miles per day. The very first thing I'd have to do is setup a charging station every time I got to a job site.

Living in the cold white north, what kind of impact is the heater going to have on the battery?

And where is the bed? Real trucks have 8' boxes minimum. That's still too small some days.

I would suggest it appeals perfectly to the segment of truck owners who will want to buy it..... Truck owners who actually don't use their trucks for "Truck" stuff but instead use them as a more manly version of an SUV

Love the innovation, but I love a Toyota Land Cruiser even more. But if they start making an enduro I might be tempted.
 
Pretty cool for being so damned ugly. 300 miles isn’t very far in Tx and off road, where there’s no power supply, range is bound to drop if you’re having fun. Shit’s got to start somewhere and it’s nice that rich nerds are footing the development, that and alleged subsidies. I’ll be driving my F-150 into the ground for another 8 years. Maybe that’s enough time for them to make them look less like Buck Roger’s mom’s truck and probably deliver a $40k space truck.

My daily drive is a 1999 Tahoe with 170k miles on it. Does everything I need / want it to do and I run around off-road without worrying about the paint. Switched to the old Tahoe from a Mercedes CLS550 a few years ago. The best thing I ever did was trade my $80k luxury car for a $3k truck. It gets terrible gas mileage but since I don't have car payments and maintenance is cheap i just live with the gas costs and call it good.

I joke around that maybe in 10 more years I'll trade it in for a 2009 Tahoe, but if this thing is still running i'll just keep driving it.

Do you get the same range on the 45 min charge, or is like a car battery when you charge with a lot of amperage, and the batteries get a surface charge that goes away more quickly if the battery is loaded?

No...I think it charges from low to 70-75% in 45 minutes. At least that is what the top of the line car does.
 
I think it's fucking cool as hell. Congrats to the OP. I started going to electric stuff with my lawn mower, then added a snow blower, and next we will replace our 20 YO Ford Van with electric.

I don't have the $ for the big Tesla. Looking at the Ford F-150 electric in 2021.

A electric motor has its advantages, a powerful enough one can slam you back in the seat and keep that linear push throughout its rotation, much like that lovely feel of constant acceleration in a jet. Plus fewer moving parts, less maintenance. The issue is the battery. Unstable, nearly explosive if breached, loses ability to hold charge, ridiculously expensive to replace even individual cells, then factor in current power grids sag under air conditioners running, let alone adding these cars to the grid. And the electric preachers bitch about adding nuclear reactors and other power plants. All the computer shit is more of a breakdown issue than data storage, which equates to even more cost of ownership.

A well known part of vehicle selling is that in the individual consumer market, many buy a vehicle based on what they may one day need or what need for only a very small portion of their total overall vehicle use.

So for many urban / suburban pickup truck drivers, it pretty much doesn't do more actual work than a good 4 door sedan will except a couple times a year when they use it to carry something.

The other issue is that bigger / higher / more visually "tough" makes people feel more secure, which is why many women like driving big SUVs even if they don't actually need them and many others buy more massive vehicles than they would ever need. It's also why on the truck market they keep getting bigger. Just compare like 1990 range F150 or 2004 Toyota Tundra trucks to a 2020 F150 or 2020 Toyota Tundra. The size has been scaled up quite significantly for appearances.

It's just started burning about a quart of oil every 4-5k miles, so a lighter rig and less 100% throttle (I've towed 10k+ with 100% throttle for miles on end) and unless you have a random part failure you've got a lot of life left.
 
Everyone seems to forget that Elon's endgame is returning to his home planet. His investments into SpaceX, The Boring Company, SolarCity, Electric vehicles all reflect how he plans on rebuilding civilization on Mars.

Last I checked an ICE can't work in Space.

Very true. I've been chasing a few oil leaks. Replaced the oil-cooler lines, fittings and oil filter adapter gaskets in Feb and it was tight as a drum. Now its started dripping from the timing chain cover and a little seepage from the valve cover gaskets.

Other than that its pretty much bulletproof. These older 5.7l just don't have that much fancy stuff to break.

That was the biggest issue with my Mercedes...engine/transmission was solid but all the little electronic gizmos kept breaking. And warranty was almost up. The last year of ownership saw something like $15k in warranty repairs and maybe 2 months total in the shop...I was totally fed up with it.
 
Love it or hate it, there's a couple notes of interest.

1. It's a frameless outer structure. It's not sheet metal but cold rolled steel. Hence being bullet proof. Not a design feature, just an added benefit of the structural steel. *There's no frame or body on frame construction.

2. Rides on airbags. Has three benefits. 1. Adjustable ride height. Lowers on hwy for increased effeciency. Raises for off road. Most clearance of any current similar truck i.e. F150. 2. Adjusts for load and active ride control. 3. On board compressor.

3. 120/220 volt outlets. No genny needed on the job site.

4. 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Super Car territory and beat a 911 in the ¼ mile. 10 second ¼ mile.

5. 14,000 lb. towing capacity. This is legit.

6. Approach, departure, break over, and clearance are all very respectable for an off road type vehicle.


I'm happy to be first in line to resell to some one else or if it's as good as I think it might be, I'll keep it. I'll have plenty of time to consider it . And for $100 (refundable) you might consider it too. Probably be able to sell it for a profit due to demand. But only time will tell.

True, but I think Savage has sold more Model 10's than AI has sold AT/AX's. Soaking up the market, forcing the other guy out, doesn't mean you necessarily have the best product; more likely, the cheapest. Look at VHS versus Betamax (yes, I'm dating myself)....
 
That's not reliability. That's just simple. Low tech vs. high tech. My current 2014 supercharged Tacoma has been without a doubt the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Zero malfunctions and dozens of computers.

I realize you don't like it and no one is going to change your mind, but let's have an actual discussion based on facts, not emotions. Fast sounding cars are not always, usually not, fast.
 
And 2.9 zero to 60 and 10 second ¼ mile is pretty impressive for a truck you can buy for $70K.
 
I've had two Cummins. The motors are reliable. The trannys, not so much. ?
