Who Else Loves That First Cup of Coffee in the Morning

I have my flame suit on and am ready.
When I was young my Mother and both of my Grandmothers would never let my brothers or me have coffee and told us,"You have to be a grown-up or an adult to have coffee." That's what all of them would say. I think they mostly wanted it for themselves and didn't want to waste it on we younguns. All of them would be on a coffee Jones when they got up and the smell of that shit brewing would be the first thing we smelled when we entered the kitchen area.
My Grandfather was raised way out in the boondocks and coffee was a luxury they could not afford so he didn't drink it either. I learned a lot from him.
Over the years as I have aged in places like the Army and at work I always looked at all of the coffee drinkers and thought to myself,"This is what addiction is all about."

Making a long story short, I never became an "Adult", I have never been a "grown-up" as defined by my Mother and Grandmothers and I don't drink that vile smelling shit in order to get me going in the morning, I just get up and start cranking. I don't need it to make me shit.
Over the years I have observed many that just have to have their coffee, Joe, Mud etc. in order to get going for the day and in many cases I would prepare it for them or give them what they needed in order to get them off of their ass and on their feet so we could do what we needed to do, just like"The Pusher Man" and felt sorry for them that they needed that kick in the ass to get going. FM
I would rather have a can of stale beer and cornflakes for breakfast than a cup of that horrible smelling shit and be on my way.

Well, as I said, my flame suit is on and I am ready and I know I am not the common person and do know there are damned few others like me out there.
Hey Foul, I hear you, my brother always told me you'll never be a man until you start drinking it black.
Well, I finally became a man,but while working in SF, Ca, the guys on the TBM would offer me a red bull or some other shit and I'd tell them if they needed that to make it they weren't much of a man. LOL

Sumatran has been my favorite bean for many, MANY years. I normally myself to 2 large cups of strong caffeinated coffee after I get up. I really do look forward to the coffee. I have the house all to myself because a I'm the first one up..well, just me and my dog. Everything is quiet and peaceful...me, coffee, and my dog.

It doesn't do much for a tight shot group unless you need it to talk to the Jones does it?
I don't need that, I am already ready to go.

Well some of you will probably think this is crazy, but I make my coffee with cold water. Yep, it's a process I learned from my uncle when I was just around college age. They had a contraption that soaked a pound of coffee overnight in cold water, then in the morning they'd decant just the liquid and store it in the refrigerator. This is the "coffee essence," and you mix about 6 ounces with a mug of very hot water. The essence from a pound of coffee lasts me about 10 days, until I have to make another batch. I find the coffee to have less of a harsh taste because there's no hot water to bring the tar out of the bean, but it has a full-bodied coffee flavor. You can mix more or less essence to make your cup stronger, but it never gets sharp or nasty flavored because you're just using the essence of the bean -- no tannins or oils that hot water brings out.

You can find it on Amazon under the brand name OXO Good Grips cold brew coffee.

Meh, we discussed wives tails like that with Frank at length one day before his class officially started.

Everyone was in agreement if you never drink caffeine it will effect group size, but if your body is conditioned to it there is no effect.

"So quit making excuses and do your part" was the polite version of what we were told :ROFLMAO:

Nothing beats the coffee found at a diner, served in a white China cup.

Here's my daily coffee corner:
- espresso machine
- coffee grinder (x2)
- programmable hot water kettle
- Immersion/pour over brewer
That's what I'm talking about,nice tools.

Personally, I wouldn't consider ALDI'S coffee something that I'd drink.
I'm not putting anyone down for liking it or any other brand.
The only thing that matters is that you like what you drink.
My wife brews our coffee old school, I can't make a pot taste the same twice.

My cure for coffee while traveling is using a Keurig.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with "cold water" brewing...does it provide hot cup of coffee? Or not?

You put 6 ounces of the cold water brew (the "essence") in a cup and add hot water. It's a hot cup of coffee when you drink it.

I like and drink a lot of different coffee, there are so many types and brands out there that I just keep trying new beans, I have some I go back to, but I keep mixing it up

That said, HOW the coffee is made is more important than what your coffee bean is

A good cup of coffee is a good cup of coffee, no matter how it is made or what bean is used, its either good or it isn't ;)

There is a science behind water temperature, size of the ground, and time of water contact with the ground that define the taste.
This science of brewing varies from coffee to coffee (hint: this is why you like diner coffee, the science of making it is precise to repeat the flavor)

I like cold coffee, I make and drink cold coffee, the science behind it is the easiest to reproduce, but it does not work well with ALL types of coffee beans. I am not sure @epoletna is explaining it right. The best formula is to take 9 cups of cold quality water (bottled not tap) and mix that with 16 oz of a medium ground coffee. Let sit 12-14 hours, then drain (they make devices to do this)

This produces what is called a coffee concentrate (think like espresso) you can drink it as a concentrate and it will taste fine but give you a serious kick. You can also mix the concentrate in a 1 to 3 ratio (one part coffee to 3 parts water) with milk or water (or some of both) to produce a more american style coffee. The concentrate will store in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. You can drink it cold or if you add 3 parts water you can add boiling water and drink it hot. Brewing this way has almost zero acid, very smooth and will not upset your stomach if you are sensitive.

For hot coffee, I prefer the Aero Press (search amazon) and you have to experiment a little to get the best cup of coffee from your favorite bean, but I have made excellent cups of coffee out of common foldgers or maxwell house, but if you get a higher end bean you can get the best taste out it as well. It just takes a little playing around with the ground, the water temp, ratio of water to grounds, and the time the water is in contact with the bean

If you like the taste of automatic drip coffee, you have just become acclimated to it and might not like coffee brewed a different way. Same with keurig, you give up the real taste of your coffee bean for convenience.

I like coffee, I like it in the morning, I can also live without it. I hate morning no matter what, coffee does not change that :)

Good explanation, Kenny. You explained it better than I did.

Bottom line, you can have hot coffee without the acid and tar of coffee that has been made by pouring hot water over beans.

One thing I am finding out is the the grind is important. I was grinding it fine for a long time -- WRONG! It needs to be coarse.

Oh, boy... them right there fightin' words!!! :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

It is amazing how different temps and brew methods extract the solubles (the chemicals we perceive as taste) out of coffee beans in such different ways, but to lump all hot coffee as acidic and tar ridden... that's just cruel. ?

Because it's possible to make hot brewed coffee candy sugar sweet, sour enough to make you pucker just like a fresh lemon, too bitter to drink or that tastes exactly like blue berries... and much more. Without anything besides the coffee bean and water.

Don't get me wrong cold brews do have a distinct advantage in that oxidation and extraction of solubles take place at a much slower rate at lower temps. Giving you a much bigger window to get to a taste that pleases your palate, but the fact remains it is still entirely possible to make hot coffee very similar in taste to any cold brew.

Of coarse all the above comes with the caveat that the bean type, origin, roast level and roast freshness all limit where you can get to as far as tastes in the cup regardless of brew method...

OK now that I've defended the honor of my beloved hot brewed coffee, rant over... lets get back to our regularly scheduled program of seeing/hearing how everyone enjoys their favorite cup of joe in the morning... or all day long in some cases. ?

I drank Folgers for over 40 years. Messed it up when I tried the Copper Moon Sumatra . I still enjoy Folgers, but it's no contest.

I was just saying the same thing to my wife last week, why do little hole in the wall diners have damn good coffee. As soon as you walk in the door that delicious smell of coffee hits you and have to order a cup, doesn’t matter if it’s 7am or 7pm. Now I know it’s Satan working his dark magic, lol!!

Oh yeah, gas stations too. I’ve gotten some tasty $1 cups of coffee from there, better than a $7 cup of sugarjavachino from Starbucks.

Its more like "that first pot of coffee in the morning". There will be others that follow.o_O

I have a variety of brew methods depending on my mood each morning...moka pot, French press, Bunn drip machine, Chemex and Breville Dual-Boiler espresso machine (don't ever buy one...horribly unreliable for a $1500 coffee machine ).

Its sort of like "how little sleep did I get and how much caffeine do I need".

About half a pot of Folgers dark roast or country roast is all I need.... waking up hours before anyone else for that first cup is a weekend tradition

I think it's those big Bunn commercial coffee makers.

They do the job.

You said first pot of coffee?

I wake up about 2 or 3 hours before I have to be at work, just so I can sit in silence and enjoy that delicious muddy water. My wife thinks I'm crazy and doesn't understand it. For sure, it is the best part of the day, just coffee in hand and a mutt at my feet.
hundred percent. 445 every morning just poured my 2nd cup!

I also like coming in on the weekend and there is still a cup of Folgers left in the pot that’s been on for hours and then cooled off. I nuke it and drink it after lunch. Nice and burnt and Smokey flavor

In the car 0545.

Usually dont drink my coffee until I get to work but this AM upon turning the ignition key the dash shows right front tire pressure 3 lbs - a pancake.

So I took my first sip of Just Black and realized I would be alright.

Emptied all the shit out of the back of the car to access the spare and jack.

Always fun in the Explorer as the spare is in a pit and I built a shelf back there for my rifles to ride on to get to the range. Only about a spare CH to get a fullsize spare out of the well.

Im generally a tire changing mofo. Pit crews have little on me. Even with the peice of shit scissor jacks cars come with these days I can get it done.

4 way out, loosen lugs, start the jack all is going well..........Ebrake didnt hold......made my piece of shit Ford jack into a pretzel.

Drank more Just Black as its too early to wake everyone up yelling Motherfucker at the top of my lungs.

Anyway friendly tow company showed up. Their floor jack got me going.

On the desk today.

Going to drink coffee.

Hope for an OT........

And Order a new floor jack to keep in the truck.

Yuban better believe it!

When I was a kid, I used to watch an early morning TV show and one of their advertisers was Yuban. They said their coffee is richer. Decades later when I remembered that, I bought a can of Yuban and tried it out and sho nuff it was richer.
Then I got married and my wife was into grinding her own whole beans and running hot water through a drip pot. There used to be a roaster in town (Reno) where we would go down and purchase a bag of whole beans still warm from having been roasted on the premises. They used to get deliveries of large bags, fresh off the boat.
Then one day, I remembered my mother's fave drink was made with Kahlua and I poured a little into my coffee and ZING, POW, BAM, the best cup of coffee ever. Now I don't put Kahlua into my coffee for the alcoholic content ;) as the heat dissipates the alcohol, but use it just as a sweetener.
So, whatever coffee one drinks, a little Kahlua makes it better!

What's the attraction to Starbucks? I've never tried it, but know several folks that cannot face the day without. When my son and his family visit, the DIL is up early to head to SB for a (couldn't tell you the multiple word name) every morning. Is it really that good?

I don’t get it either. Starbucks is nasty. Overpriced burnt garbage.
Always say you can determine how big an asshole someone is from their coffee order there. If it goes, blah, blah, 1/2 this, 1/4 that, foamed, fricked, skim, blah, blah; they’re probably a pretty big asshole. Longer order-bigger asshole.
I don’t care for Starbucks politics and virtue signaling either. I’m sure that doesn’t help with my opinion of them. If they had the best coffee anywhere I still would not patronize them. I try not to give money to groups or companies I despise.

The cup you use affects the taste of the coffee if you drink it black.
Wine taste is also affected by the glass used.

I was WAY to much into coffee for years... always black...

$200 conical burr grinder
$350 Technivorm
Aero-Press
ordering everything under the sun to try various coffees(up to and including kopa luwac, which BTW didnt live up to the hype).

only stopped short of roasting my own beans, but thats only because I had a ready supply from 3 of the highest rated roastaries in the country...

Now at work I drink the shit that comes out of the airplane coffee maker or I carry some vietnamese 3 in 1 instant coffee packets(G7 brand, surprisingly good). I will get a Dunkin if there is one in the airport, but I refuse to pay for starbucks, but will drink one if somebody else buys...

Now at home I drink black tea(usually Tazo brand) in the morning(supposed to have more caffeine than coffee) with local honey I buy at either the local farm store or the farmers market. I much prefer it to coffee anymore... dont know why. Guess my palate changed.

Had lots of good coffee last April when we were down your way in the Keys/Naples.

Getting notification from places we had booked for our April Utah trip that they dont expect to be open.

Was looking forward to whiskey by the fire and coffee under canvas here.....

but doesnt look like its going to be done.

Ill drag my son out to western MA for some nylon tent camping instead.

OP—-while most of what you post is utter stupidity and regurgitated bs...I can’t argue with you here. Good Sumatra from a French press with water from 200-205 is indeed as good as I have found as well. The true key for the French press is the grind. It must be a coarse as kitty litter to make properly, and you should always “fluff” the grind with a couple tablespoons of the same temp water and let it sit for a few minutes before adding the remainder of the water.
Anything other than a conical burr grinder is a waste of coffee. A great entry level is the Baratza Virtuoso.

La Spaziale S1 and MACAP burr grinder have done the trick for me for over 12 years now. I have taken that machine apart a couple of times and it always comes back stronger than before. It is a bit of a pain as it requires a 30A line and has to be hard plumbed but it is worth it
