Rifle Scopes Vortex Razor HD Gen III 1-10x

Mine shipped from sport Optics today and should be here Friday. It's going to replace a cmr762 mk6 1-6 on my 16" CL LMT mws which I'm planning on sbr'ing and getting a 13.5 lw ss barrel for.

March has a 1-10x24FFP coming out toward the end of the year that will have side focus.

Beggars can’t be choosers but I would love a 1 or 1.5-10 x 44. Anything bigger than 24. I’d love to try a 1.8-10 from USO but don’t want to risk it given all the issues I’ve read about.

Well shit, my 1-10 Razor turned into another ATACR!

interesting. only saw reticle options on the site. have to do some more digging. thanks

What he meant was the turrets have a cover on them and you can leave them covered or take them off and leave the knobs exposed. The knobs are similar to the Razor II 1-6. There is no locking turret.

Word. Prefer that actually. Might be a perfect scope for me. Hopefully I can get my hands on that and a uso 1.8-10 before pulling the trigger

Check with Burris. Now that I think about it, I do not know if that is available for all XTR II scopes. I think it was on the 2-10x42, but it has been a while and my memory is not what it used to be.

Anyone purchase/purchasing scope caps for their RG3?

I originally was thinking Aadland/Aadmount. They sell sets, which are mostly sold out, but I got measurements from Vortex and was going to contact them and see if I could order individual caps... They won’t respond to emails or phone.

Tenebraex is the next attempt. I’ll see if contact can be made and if they’ll accommodate.

I would order Vortex caps, but they’ve horrible reviews.

I’ve always felt caps take away from the Razor 1-6 “floating image” experience. I stopped running them myself and doubt i will for the 1-10.
Maybe a scopecoat for storage?

Horrible reviews? Have seen a couple people not happy but the vast majority are very happy. I like the Defender caps a lot. They are easy to put on, snap flat open out of the way and are pretty tough. Even if you did manage to break them, which I haven't yet, they are covered and will be replaced by Vortex.

The only not happy reviews I have seen is people saying they slip. A hint with that is spray a little hair spray on the inside of the rubber part of the cap that touches the scope and it holds nice and firm. Had to do it on one scope myself. Let it set for a couple hours before popping cap open.

For $40 for a complete set of caps the Defenders are a great deal.

Thanks for the insight. The caps coming off in the reviews is the consistent premise. Vortex had responded with some recommendations to remedy the situation. One of which was putting tape around the optic, so it seemed that they acknowledged it was a problem.

I may give em a try, especially with their customer service. Maybe they'd be secure on this particular optic. Not a fan of jerry-rig'n things to make them secure though.

The scope coat idea above wasn't a bad idea either.

Thanks.

Don't always have to do something to make them work. Like I said I did it on one scope, and only on eye piece, out of about 12 so not a huge issue. But your money and scope. If you don't want to try them then there are other options as you mentioned.

Scopecoats are great for storage. I use them in the safe to stop banging up of scopes but they come off when the rifle comes out of the safe.

I'm sure Jon Aadland is working on those caps and you can order sets, or individuals when they come out.

If they are 'out of stock' you can order them and they'll ship pretty quickly - I've never had to wait more than 2 weeks for anything from them.

Jon is great about returns, I decided I only wanted a front cap on a scope and they took back the rear & refunded it; zero drama.

Some things are worth the wait in this instant gratification world we live in.

I have seen this and found that (for me), if I take off the rear cap on 1-6/1-8 optics that it is just as good with no caps (ie, front cap only). So on those I use an Aadland front and either no rear or a cheap Butler Creek (for storage only, I take it off when the rifle is in use).

It’s a pretty sweet optic, but I think that 10 power is overkill. A 1-6 with a red dot like reticle is nice. I can’t imagine being a fan of the 1-10 with a regular long range optic reticle during short engagements.

I'm not much of a Vortex fan but they nailed this reticle in the 1-10 well. It's a versatility thing, CQB or shooting steel at 1000Y - still seeing the target halfway decently, which isn't easy at 6x.

I look at most of the other reticles out there in 1-6's and 1-8's and they are kind of lame for long range. BDC's, huge center dots, outright stupid looking reticles that are more gimmicky than useful, etc, making them more QCB oriented than long range oriented.

This scope and reticle strikes a good balance of all. Too bad they didn't put a side focus on it though.

Mine came in and I mounted it up on my mws yesterday. The dot is almost stare into the sun bright. Brighter than anything else I've had. I do wish the posts extended all the way to the edges of the fov. For me it's just a bit faster to find the center especially if the dot isn't turned on.

I have a nx8, mk6 cmr762, genii razor mrad and now the gen 3 on hand too. Hopefully I'll get time to have all of them out at one time.

Brighter than even the NX8? Damn!

Interested to hear your comparison. Right now I'd like to get one side by side with my NX8.

both the NX8 and RG3 have very bright illumination. I cannot envision a scenario where max level would be needed on either optic.

more range time today on my RG3 and did some brief comparison between it and the NX8. the size difference between the two is noticeable but I prefer the reticle on the Razor. I wish I had an ATACR to compare to, but alas my piggybank is finite.

I also wish I had access to a range with targets and ranges from 50 to 1000. more so than any other scope I've used I think the RG3 will kill it on that scenario with a good semi in whatever caliber you fancy.

Which reticle is everyone going with? I’m MRAD all the way but the MOA with BDC for this optic is looking pretty good

MRAD as I'll be moving it from different guns here and there and public math is already hard enough.

MRAD for me. I don't prefer BDCs that cater to one load, though they are brilliant if you are using that load...

A bikini scope cover like the Swarovski ones (see through) would be nice.

MOA. It's for multi-gun, I need my on-reticle cheat sheet.

Most definitely. For me it would be better if the lowest setting were dimmer but other than that I can't say there's much of anything I don't like about it.

Well I made it to the range today with the 1-10x mounted on my 20" PSA .308 AR. I got it sighted in at 50 yards and then went over to the 550 yard range. I tried the rifle with the 155 Steel Match ammo first but that ammo was not that accurate in the rifle to begin with so I was almost using it as foulers as the barrel was freshly cleaned. It hit at 200 and 300 using the BDC but at 400 and 550 it was dancing around the plates. Misses were more due to ammo than the reticle as even when I held to make the correction it would go another way. I connected a couple times but more of a luck thing.

I then pulled out the 168 AMAX and hit one for one all the way out to 550 yards using the MOA BDC reticle. Once at 550 I sat there and just dropped rounds on the 12" plate and then went over to the 10" plate and did the same. 400 yard was an 8" plate. I am very happy with the BDC as I was with the JM-1 in my 1-6x scopes. No issues with parallax at the longer ranges. Targets were plenty clear enough also to make the hits even with the heavy mirage today. The book says that a 168 at 2600fps will track with the reticle but mine were at 2539fps average and hitting. With the extra hold marks under I don't see why longer holds would not be achievable as well.

All in all I am very happy with the 1-10x. I might pop it over to a shorter 18" .223 and play with some close targets next to see how the reticle works close in. Might have to shoot out to 550 with it too and see how it works. At the range today I didn't use the illumination at all on 10x and had no issues seeing the reticle for zeroing or the 200 yard shots.

Yes. I was a little surprised by it.

I played with it side by side with my Razor 1-6. They’re very different scopes but also have many similarities.

They each have their strengths. Without going into too much detail until I’ve spent some time behind the 1-10, my initial thought is that there is a market for both scopes.

When ready, I'd be curious to learn more on the above!

Very interested as well on even your initial thoughts between the two. 1-10x is probably more than I really need for a 14.5 223 and the 1-6 are cheap right now so I’m on the fence oh which to go with.

Me too. Might jump on a 1-6 when the mad sell off begins.
I keep hearing this predicted, but I'm skeptical it's really going to be a thing. The GenIII is operating at a much different price. I do think we'll see some dumping at $700-$800 if there's like a Gen III 1-8x SFP that's closer to what the current Razors are going for.

Hey now, don't ruin my fantasy!!!!!!

I paid around $1000 for my 1-6 E a few months once coupons and active junky factored in. and the 1-10 was high $1600's. Not a huge jump in price IMO. I was going to hold off on the 1-10 when I initially saw the MSRP.

I sold the 1-6 E for what I paid. I like my p4xi's for my 14.5s and SBR's due to the lighter weight. The 1-10 is amazing and staying on a 16" Criterion barreled upper. I'm hoping Vortex can put out a lighter 1-6, 1-8 at some point around $1k.

Where did you order your 1-10x?

I don’t see a huge 1-6 Razor sale happening. Some will but they are two different scopes that each do their intended job quite well.

Just curious as to your perspective on the 1-6, comparison to the 1-10. If price were the same, I don’t see any reason for myself at least, where I would choose the 1-6. The weight is the same and the 1-10 essentially does the same thing on the low end, with additional capabilities at max magnification and depending on reticle choice, an additional envelope. The 1-6 seems like a fine optic, but it’s in the 1-8 or above weight class. I can understand if I were on a budget attempting to secure best bang for buck. Maybe I’m missing something. Again, I’m curious.
