Purchasing my first serious rifle. Grew up bird hunting in W TX and relocated to Louisiana. Putting together a ‘do it all’ rifle—mostly whitail & Mulies, some extended target shooting.

Have a Havak Element on order and in need of a versatile scope to match.

AND I just secured a 45% discount for Leupold.

Price is no object, which one would you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your insights!

What ranges are you realisticly planning to shoot? When I bought by first scope for deer hunting 25 years ago in Michigan, all the recommendations were get the lowest power variable possible. The rational is when the deer walks out 25 yards in front of you, your scope set at highest power will never find him, let alone the place you want to shoot the deer at in anything over 10 power. And if the deer is at anything over 100 yards, a good shooter can change the magnification up without spooking the deer. I bought a VXIII in 2.5-8x36 and it is still a favorite. When hunting I kept it a 2.5 magnification. But when I got it, the guy behind the counter was pushing me to go lower. Still like my choice, but I do see his point. Looking at Leupold now, and price is no object, the VX6 2-12x42 looks great. Even the VX5 2-10x42 at half the price is good for short to medium range shooting.

Yugga,
Along with the mark5 you should consider the hd5 or hd6 line. For hunting in Louisiana I would want a second focal plane iluminated reticle. Something simple like the T-MOA VX-6HD 3-18x44. Would work well for treesand oak bottom whitetail and out west for mule deer. Plus it would save you 1/4lb vs the mark5

I don’t disagree with this either. The mark5 is awesome as I was saying above and own a few but my newest hunting rig I actually have that vx6hd 3-18x44 duplex and it’s awesome. Cds dial tuned into my load and it’s perfect for lots of hunting situations. I run the cch as mentioned above on my two mark5 and if your looking at those type of reticals it’s a good non busy choice for the very busy type of reticles if that makes sense.
