The "New" Barrett MRAD Thread!!!!!!

My 300 PRC barrel showed up two weeks ago too. Waiting on some ADG brass to go back in stock or the Lapua brass to come out next year. Almost tempted to buy the RCC brass. By the way I saw on another forum that someone can do some milling to put in an mlok if you have the older version MRAD. I don’t think it’s worth doing that.
The next big thing is ARCA rails and ARCA LOCK. I bought the 12" for the MRAD and the ARCA Barricade stop that also takes an Atlas Bipod from Area419. Friday marks 12-weeks waiting for my MRAD. Dylan with Barrett said current flurry of orders has pushed them to 16-week lead time. Based on my order date he thought it would ship in the next week or two. It feels like the Zombie Apocalypse will already be over by the time I get it.

I'm kind of old-fashioned ... the only things I mount are a scope, and a bipod ... so no fancy-schmancy MLOK milling required.

Why need the mlok anyways? I’d rather have rails that screw in. Also, what are you hanging off the side of a bolt action?

For what it’s worth, I picked up a $15 generic Arca rail section off Amazon (the ones with a large continuous slot through the center) and just picked up some fasteners at Ace that fit the pre-drilled holes on the MRAD chassis. Little removable LocTite on the screw threads and it’s been solid.

Any suggestions for a good 300 Norma muzzle break? Looking at the gen ii APA Little B

Any suggestions for a good 300 Norma muzzle break? Looking at the gen ii APA Little B

FWIW:
I have a Terminator T2 on a 300WM, APA little bastard on a 308 and a couple of Area419 Sidewinders on a 6.5 CM and 6.5 PRC, the Sidewinder brakes seem to be much more effective brakes when taken off / put back on than the others.

Did a little Black Friday shooting with my son today. Didn't get a chance to shoot the 300 PRC barrel I picked up, a unnamed member's share price for ammo was just too much for me to handle :)

Found 100 New Lapua Cases in the basement, loaded them up with 250 SMK and 87 Grains of RL-25

Has anyone tried to balance your rifle? What is good enough?

I just experimented with mine, it’s on an anvil 30, with sawtooth rifles arca rail, it’s very rear biased.

I took a bag and sat it on-top the end of the rail then added brass to it until I achieved near perfect balance without locking the anvil lever down.

It’s with the 26” fluted 338 barrel, even with an arca adapter and 5H, I had to add about 3.6lb to get it to balance. I’m sure the effect isn’t as noticeable on a large flat bag like a GC, I just did it to see what the bias in weight was. I had considered switching to a 4-9 universal weighted rail but that only gives 1.5pb of weight to play with and it’s evenly spaced. Rotational physics would say the closer to the balance point the less gravitational force added weight actually has.

I’ll see how much weight I need to balance it on a couple bags next time I’m feeling up to it.

Got mine last week. Tuesday I zerod with 6.5 cm- man this thing is easy to shoot! Today I put on the 300NM barrel and POI was .4r, elevation dead on. Was only at a 300 yard range, up .3 for 200, up .8 plus a little (solution said .84) for first round impacts on 3" plates. I was shooting an MPA 6.5 cm before, all my dope seems good , ergos are just more comfortable with the MRAD. Hopefully next weekend i can get on the 2200yard range witrh the 300NM see how i do in some wind. MPA had a lighter 2 stage trigger, MRAD is fine stock.
I think my form is a little off with the 300NM as I am not getting back on target as quick as i can with the 6.5. The little bit of extra impulse shows me my "good enough" is a little off. Part of it is the Barrett wants to be a little higher on the bags, i am sure I will get it sorted.
Ordered a second 300NM mag and picked up 6 barrel screws- i am completely scared they might get tore up with too many barrel changes so maybe i will rotate screws.
The tip to rotate the barrel a little when tightening seems like the hot tip, thanks! All my money is going to ammo now I guess

Headed off to the Outdoor range today, rain kicks up so my son and I turn around and hit the indoor range that has 100 yard tubes in it.

He's getting good at handling the 338 lapua

Good shooting by your son , however, get him some nice earmuffs. All that expensive gear and then cheap earmuffs. I can’t imagine how loud that 338 it is while being shot inside without a silencer. Don’t take this personally , however, you got to protect his ears.

Doth thou refereth to MOI ???

Hinterland had called Barrett when I ordered my MRAD 300PRC and they said 6-10 weeks. Tomorrow marks 15 weeks to the day. Getting anxious.

Have 10 mags and a 338NM barrel sitting here that are basically useless without the rifle.

Do you have a link to that arca plate? I'll search for it when I get home, but this would solve all my problems :)

Anyone here shooting a 24" 338lm? It looks like you only give up about 40 fps off the 26" according to a barrel cutting test online. It would be a bit more handy.

300 PRC barrel kit finally showed up. I have dies and reloading stuff on the way, and 400 rounds of Hornady 225gr ELD-M to shoot in the meantime to generate brass. Life is good ... done buying barrel kits as I now have 6.5-CM, 308-Win, 300-WinMag, 300-PRC, and 338-LM. Probably time to sell a few stand-alone rifles with duplicate calibers. Lately it seems all I ever want to take to the range is my MRAD.

I'm curious what are the differences between different Barrett MRAD configuration that justify such large price differences? For example some config is usually listed just over $4k, while some are close to $6k.

Are the only difference is the adjustable stock and the ability to swap different caliber barrels? As far as accuracy and performance goes, it should be the same right? If I only plan on shooting 338 LM out of mine, I should just be good to go with the $4k model?

if that is the case then Id be willing to accept all your other rifles into the fold , I mean if you don't want them or have no room in your cold black heart for them anymore . lol congrats on the purchase hope it is everything you wanted it to be . As for me I will desire every hand gun rifle and shot gun all of them up to the second I draw my last breath including the ones i already have .
this but about guns

Those two changes (folding stock and interchangeable barrels) are huge IMHO.

What may be the difference that you are seeing in pricing for the same caliber MRAD is the type of barrel...................Length, twist, and mostly carbon fiber. CB adds a lot more to the cost, due to lighter weight.

The price difference that he is mentioning is the difference between the Mrad and the SMR version. (Single mission rifle) Essentially folding stock and caliber swap vs fixed stock single caliber. https://barrett.net/pdf/price-list.pdf

The Mrad is the better deal, if you want one wait for a used one to pop up and check eurooptic. I picked up my mrad from them used and they had bought it from barrett after a demo. Low round count, not scratch on it, just over $4k. you get the folding stock and caliber swap which is a benefit. Its like buying a used glock, its broken in and ready to go. Extremely pleased with the system, makes me wish I hadnt wasted my time trying the DTA SRS.

I have one, my avg fps was either 2589 or 2689 I’ll have to check which exactly.

I’ve been shooting 308 on it until yesterday I shot the 338 for the first time. Amazingly, the scope adjustment going from 308 to 338 was right .1 mil, elevation was the same at 100m.

It didn’t phase AR500 at 100m but 3 shots a 1/4” mild steel plate at 370 yards and it bored clean holes through it. I wouldn’t mind replacing the 24” with a 26” barrel to fully utilize the potential of the rifle. I had some SNAFU with my ballistic app, I had inadvertently used a .073 click instead of .1mil click. Initially I dialed in twice the elevation I needed (doh).

I’d prefer a heavy barrel to fluted, the added weight could take some
more recoil off, and stabilize it. My 338 SR is in jail shooting it the tripod rocks a good bit, I could probably rotate it to have the triangle support the recoil more effectively.

So I scanned through this entire thread. Anyone found someone who can reuse the barrel extension to make a barrel. Anyone actually had one made with the makers kit? SAC doesn’t do it anymore.

There is another thread on this topic, it kinda dead ended without much good stuff but there were two smiths recommended in the 2nd post. Search for “mrad maker’s kit”

So I have 4 of the makers kits in possession, and 1 backordered. I have a number of barrels from bartlein on order and got the first one the other day but I'm waiting on a reamer for that. If I get the other barrels I'll post as I get them done. Figure I'll send the 6.5 to GAP since I want to do a 6.5saum. I went 6.5 light palma, medium palma's for the two .338's and a heavy palma for the .375. I'll let you know how they turn out and who I used since I plan to farm the work out to more than one smith.

Southern Precision Rifles is doing a 300 PRC Bartlein MRAD Barrel for me with the makers kit, which I would expect to shoot 1/4 MOA with the right load. Got the 9 Twist Heavy Varmint. He bought the necessary tools for my build. And he lives about 40 minutes from the Barrett factory and has relationship there. Barrett uses some very specialized tools and the torque on the nut is 120 ft-lbs! His website is Bugholes.com and he said he would let me know after he does mine if it will be worthwhile for him to offer as a service. He is copying the flutes on the factory barrel and is putting the factory muzzle brake on since I have a Barrett AM338 suppressor on the way. He is also prepping it for me to Cerakote FDE to match the MRAD it feels like I will never get. Going on 17 week wait this Friday. I might sell my Barrett 300 PRC barrel or keep it as a backup depending on how accurate it is.

Keep the barrel. I haven't shot an mrad barrel yet that has disappointed.

By the way I saw on another forum that someone can do some milling to put in an mlok if you have the older version MRAD. I don’t think it’s worth doing that.

I don't think it's worth milling the cuts for that reason alone, but if you're gonna have it refinished then why not? Mine came black and that was the last color I wanted. Cost to cut a few Mlok slots is actually about the same as the Cerakote job and it reduces labor time to do 'em simultaneously since you don't have to protect or touch up the finish where it was machined I'd reckon. I wanted it done in 20150 Coyote, same shit they use on the Mk22 --it's an "Elite" version of Cerakote and is supposed to be "better". The Mlok cuts will be like the ones on the Mk22 too, which are significantly easier to cut, not the later gen. civvie model Barrett also sells that retains the threaded holes.

I already sent the barrel off to Elite Iron to have the Sierra SD suppressor fit, I'll have to do this with the other two barrels when I get 'em too (.300NM 26" and probably .308 20" since I never adopted 6.5CM). I may get an extra 17" CF .308 bbl. later for use with a TBAC can to keep weight to a minimum since the rifle in that configuration is damn near weightless. I could be wrong but I'm willing to bet that SIerra SD can will run circles around the Barrett offering --Dale doesn't fuck around when it comes to precision or performance.

Barrel had to be turned down in order for the brake to fit, then the brake has to be matched to the suppressor itself. The can gets indexed to the rifle so that POI shift is always vertical, if at all. Same work was done on my .50 but it's direct thread with an indexed brake that can be swapped without use of shims to line it up. Dale's custom work is always the titties.

IMG_1401-2.JPG

IMG_1403-2.JPG

IMG_1402-2.JPG

If the brake ports look familiar it's because Elite Iron is the one that makes all those brakes for Harris. Barrel looks like it was made this way, totally flawless. Dale doesn't do just suppressors, his custom work is out of this world and I'd love to have an integral something from his shop.

I'm not much for clones really and if I'd bought this rifle new I'd have gotten it in Barrett brown with the late gen. Mlok cuts with vents and threaded holes and wouldn't have had to do shit. But I got it on here for $4k said and done, folder, interchangeable barrels and small dia. bolt, so I couldn't bitch, I'll only be in for what, $4700 all said and done?

I'll post pictures after LRI sends the chassis back, they just sent me confirmation they got it. So you'll all get to see if it's worth it or not for yourselves. Maybe I'll have the 5-25 ATACR and Badger Condition One mount by then too.

Got tired of waiting on Hinterland and snagged a 338 LM in FDE off Gunbroker. Spent today Cerakoting a 419 rail, Warne 7902 Bipod and bag rider in bake Elite FDE. Custom Bartlein MRAD barrel will be here Monday so next weekend is mags, Nightforce and barrels in Cerakote no-bake FDE C-series. Also, installed an MPA EVG Grip but not sure I am going to keep it on. When everything is together I will post up pics.

Last thing... anyone using a tripod? Looking at the RRS ones but lots of $$$ and other than it having an ARCA rail interface, not sure which one to get.

My Bartlein 300PRC 28" MRAD Barrel showed up today. I will be Cera-coating it this weekend. Super stoked! I expect this to be a 1/4 to 1/3 MOA tackdriver. Southern Precision Rifles did a freaking outstanding job on it. The Maker Kit is a huge PITA. Not sure what Barrett uses to torque the 120 ft-lb's required on the smooth collar, but Greg with SPR had to machine flats into it in order to apply the specified torque. He also follows Bartlien's instructions to a tee regarding the fluting process.

I’m thinking about getting Bartlein CF in 6.5 CM. Did you have to send Bugholes a barrel makers kit? And if so I wonder if it’s a one and done deal with the makers kit.

I don't believe it will work with a carbon fiber barrel since Greg had to use the Heavy Varmit to have the ability to machine it to work with the Maker's kit. And yes, I ordered it off the Barrett Website and had it shipped to him. From there it was one and done. Mine was the guinea pig and now he has the proper tools and know how. Another plus... he is a short drive from the Barrett factory and has a contact there.

Cerakoted the 338NM Barrel, 300PRC Bartlein Barrel, MRAD mags and my ATACR yesterday before Superbowl. Spent hours masking the ATACR. Super nervous to paint that but I am satisfied with the way it turned out. Has to cure 5 days and then hopefully I will be putting rounds downrange next weekend.

I see conflicting information on Barrett's site regarding 300 Norma barrel options for MRAD:

Top level page for everything MRAD is at https://barrett.net/products/mrad/

Under https://barrett.net/products/firearms/mrad-mk22/ it shows specs for 338 Norma, 300 Norma and 7.62 barrels. 300 Norma barrel is described as 26" with 8" twist.

Under https://barrett.net/products/firearms/mrad-standard/ there are many barrel options. 300 Norma is described as 24" with 10" twist.

Do both 300 Norma barrels actually exist and are they available for civilian retail customers? Or is one or the other a typo?

All those barrel options exist. The mk22 with 1/8 twist is what was spec'd by Army contract. Pretty sure on one of the podcasts Frank had mentioned that the Army has had some issues with 1/8 and 300norma spinning bullets apart. 1/10 is plenty and 1/9 is great too. If there is something you want call Barrett and ask for Franz. More barrel choices here. https://store.barrett.net/c-485-rifle-accessories.aspx?section=-60-&sortby=pricedesc

The Barrett barrels are extremely good. My 338LM barrel has over 3300 rounds through it now, bore looks like crap and is fire-cracked like crazy, however still prints 1/4 MOA groups. It refuses to die. Don't discount the factory barrels, they're tough as nails and super precise.
