The "New" Barrett MRAD Thread!!!!!!

All those barrel options exist. The mk22 with 1/8 twist is what was spec'd by Army contract. Pretty sure on one of the podcasts Frank had mentioned that the Army has had some issues with 1/8 and 300norma spinning bullets apart. 1/10 is plenty and 1/9 is great too. If there is something you want call Barrett and ask for Franz. More barrel choices here. https://store.barrett.net/c-485-rifle-accessories.aspx?section=-60-&sortby=pricedesc
Schmi, thank you for bringing up the possible concern with faster twist. Link you sent shows 14 barrel options. I noticed some retailers offer MRAD also in 7mm Remington which I don't see listed on Barrett site.

Looks like the standard "fully featured" MRAD with folding stock and user changeable barrels is sold out everywhere.

Got my Barrett 26" 300 Norma conversion kit two months ago. Load development is promising so far shooting Berger 220 LRHT in Peterson brass. Thanks to Berger technical for load guidance with the powders I had on hand.
I'm gathering reloading supplies for the future 300 magnum class LR rifle this summer. Currently sourcing jugs of RL26 and H1000. Also hearing recommendations for Norma 217.

The Barrett barrels are extremely good. My 338LM barrel has over 3300 rounds through it now, bore looks like crap and is fire-cracked like crazy, however still prints 1/4 MOA groups. It refuses to die. Don't discount the factory barrels, they're tough as nails and super precise.
I wanted a 28" 300PRC barrel so that is why I went with the makers kit. I am excited to shoot the factory Barrett 338NM barrel, but since I don't reload, I am hoping the MK22 kit will result in more people using that caliber and more ammo choices. Still trying to decide if I want to keep the factory 300PRC barrel and swap the unfired 338LM barrel from the GB one I purchased when my Hinterland order finally shows up. I have a buddy interested in the 2nd MRAD I have coming, if it ever gets here, but it may make more sense to hold for a few months and then get what the market will bear. I paid $700 more for the one off GB and it least want to recoup that difference.

My understanding of this from a vendor, is that it will at least a year before they will be producing the standard. Another military contract. He is no longer accepting orders. Grab what you can, if you can.

My guy at Barrett said for orders placed today they are over a year out on production. If you see one on GB for less than $7,000, snag it!!! There are a few folders for sale on there now and the rest are SMR's.

UPDATE: 308 Listing has been removed and other poster referenced no feedback.

UPDATE: Actually a guy has a "buy it now" one on there for $4k right now with Spuhr rings and Leopold scope. Heck even if the 308 barrel is bad that is a no brainer.
I see one MRAD w/ Leupold scope advertised for $4000. Seller registered on GB yesterday. Also note his feedback.

Do you happen to remember which podcast that was on? I’d be interested in listening to that
I don't think the 8 twist works, that is what A1st Sold the Army on, and his rifle was a 20" barrel. In that context yes, you have an argument for an 8 twist. But when guys are squeezing every bit of velocity of out of them the 8 twist is a bad idea.

Almost every week I get a call or email asking what twist my 300NM is and how it shoots. They are struggling to get the 8 Twist rifles to work right.

My 300NM is a 1-10, and it's a 1/4 MOA shooter at 100, and carries out to beyond 2400 with the same accuracy. I have taken to 2550 yards with awesome results. I just did a series of load development shots and it was again, sub 3/8s with most of the loads, and I am getting 2997fps out of a 25" barrel with no pressure signs shooting a 230gr Berger.

I would honestly avoid the 1-8, but I know everyone is going that way because the Army says it's better for transonic. Not sure how much more past 2550 you have to go in order to see this "better" but I would be curious how well it works up. The complaints I am fielding seem to be strong and valid.
That was in this thread post #59 https://www.snipershide.com/shooting/threads/school-me-about-300-norma-magnum.6869034/page-2

Later in post #105 from 2020, he said it still is the same as he just ordered a 1/10 for a 300 norma.

So far I have gathered:
1) MRADs with folding stock and replaceable barrels are sold out nationwide and new production is 12+ months out
2) For 300 Norma the preferred or safer twist option is 1:10.

I do see MRAD SMRs in 300 Norma readily available but these are with the 26", 1:8 twist barrel.

How involved is the barrel replacement operation in SMR? Is it even possible to use the MRAD barrel kits in SMR or would I need an aftermarket barrel?

You can't replace the barrel. SMR = single mission rifle. That's why there are so many out there for sale. If you can get your hands on an MRAD, do it. My guess is that gougers will now set in on gb due to the long wait.

WOW ... just catching up on this thread. Got my MRAD (300-WM folder) a couple of years ago, and accumulated the four other barrel kits I wanted over the next year. Been loving looking at my MRAD before a range trip and saying ... "Do I want to shoot 6.5-CM, 300-WM, 300-PRC, 308, or 338-LM today?" I feel for the guys that want this rifle, and can't get it. It's exceptional, IMHO. I just don't get why a company as healthy as Barrett, doesn't spool up production to take advantage of this demand. Do they "not want" all that consumer revenue? If (when) additional constraints are placed on firearms like this, they will wish they'd met the moment when they had the opportunity. If their factory isn't running three shifts and working 24x7 ... then they're not as smart as I'd hoped they were.

I'm pretty sure they are running 3 shifts and also filling some massive military contracts at this point. The entire industry is overwhelmed and most are having supply chain issues, although Barrett is somewhat immune since they make almost everything in house. Have you tried buying ammo lately? 😄

Don't need ammo ... I've always kept at least two years of excess supply in a very large ammo safe in my garage. The family joke has always been "When the zombies attack, everyone head for Rusty's house". I also started reloading when I retired on Nov-1, and have had good luck (and hard work) (and big costs) accumulating supplies. I have plenty of factory cartridges and reloading supplies to last me until the panic-buying subsides ... unless it lasts more than a couple of years. This time next year, I'll reassess how much I'm shooting, and adjust if things are still heavily constrained.

Would gunsmith be able to replace the SMR factory barrel with another factory barrel?

I wonder if anyone on here has an SMR to look at how it is attached. Without the barrel change feature, especially in calibers like .308, the SMR MRAD becomes very expensive for what it is. IMHO, the modularity of the MRAD is one of it's biggest selling points. That and the bolt action designed for filthy environments.

I'd have to agree ... the modularity and foldability of the MRAD is what makes it so versatile and useful. The SMR is just a very premium-priced single-caliber precision rifle. There are many comparable full-feature rifles out there at much lower prices. If I couldn't get a MRAD, I'd look for one of the other modular quick-change rifles, or stick with a good single-caliber of another brand. Just my humble opinion ...

Gotter-dun over the weekend. This is the Bugholes Bartlein 28" 300PRC Barrel. The barrel and bolt swap was stupid easy. The bipod is a Warne, which I am really impressed by the ease of deployment. The rail is Area 419. Also bought the Barrett AM338, which is currently on lockdown waiting for NFA approval.

Bought this a while back but my Proof barrel just showed up today. Was originally shipped with the standard 17” 308 but went back with a 24” 300WM. OrderEd a mag from Euro Optic so we will be in business later this week. After that winter storm we just had, I‘m looking forward to some range time.

That scope camo job is amazing. I can't even tell it's there!!

What is the street price on a conversion kit when times are somewhat normal? I've been reading about this platform and I'm very interested in acquiring one in the future because of the caliber swapping options.

Does anyone else make a conversion kit for it or is it a Barrett exclusive?

LMGTFY; welcome to the party pal, I can say I honestly believe the answer to every question you ask is in the 28 pages of this thread.

You're looking at $1500 for a conversion kit, or $1200 or so if they're having a 25% off sale. Nobody else makes conversion kits, but you can buy a barrel extension from them for $400 or so and have any competent smith spin you up a barrel.

Time to start buying Barrel Conversion Kits ...
Working on it! A 338LM barrel is next for me, then a 300PRC. Got a bunch of 338 Brass I need to put to use.

Any of you guys have any input on a 338 20" barrel vs the 26"? Max distance I'll be stretching out to is a mile.

26" for sure if going a mile. Even with a 26" you will be in the transonic zone at 1760 yards.

Hi all, been loving reading this thread so I figured I would join up. I have an MRAD on order but its gonna be a long wait sadly. I did have a question that I was curious about. Are there any differences between the MRAD and the MK22 besides the MLOK and the color available to it?

My plan is still to end up with the MRAD-- but not looking to order something and wait years for it. I can get the SMR- but it seems like a lot of $ for what it is. Other than an AI- what other rifles would you put in the similar category... that "possibly" could be had sooner?

Have patience its a good system. I've been very impressed so far. Only thing close as you say would be the AI, or cadex.

I'll be honest, Im really thinking I prefer my MRAD over my AI AX. Idk yet, gonna take some time. The trigger is a hell of a lot better, action is near as smooth, I had bad buyers remorse at first but it went out the window as soon as I opened that pelican case...

Does anyone know the weight savings of the 22" carbon fiber barrel over the standard 22" fluted steel barrel in the folding stock MRAD in .308? I have looked on the Barrett website but it is unclear what the actual weight difference is between the two barrels.

Wait ... wait ... I know this answer. "Not enough to justify the huge price increase." LOL
I have the the 24" SS fluted .308 barrel ... and with the muzzle brake it weighs 5 lbs 13.5 oz.
Sorry ... that's the best I can do.
BTW ... I have 5 barrel kits and literally "never" shoot this one since I'm almost exclusively shooting ELR stuff now. It's almost new ... <50 rounds and bought from Barrett last July ... so if you want the barrel kit (barrel, brake, bolt-head, mag, inner/outer bags), drop me a PM and make me an offer.

What calibers are you using for ELR stuff? Super intrigued by the 375 EnABELR.

Can anyone definitively confirm that an MRAD SMR cannot support either a barrel conversion to a different barrel or that a custom barrel cannot be installed to support a different caliber (i.e .308 to 300 Norma)? Thank you much!

I always wanted to try a tacticam, how is the eye relief with it on?
It reduces the eye relief somewhat, as well as the optical quality when looking through your scope, but it's one of the only better solutions out there. There's another one, forgot the name of it that seems to be good also. Forget the PhoneSkope, it doesn't seem rated for recoil higher than .223. It also didn't allow fitting to a Razor ocular.

What is the Cerakote color code for the MK22? Is it Elite Series? I heard someone say it's "Coyote" but not sure which series Barrett is using.
I have an early model "Multi-role-brown" and the finish is so flawless inside and out, that it leads me to believe it might be anodized instead of coated. Anyone can confirm? I'd hate to blast off an anodized finish.
