I can't even begin to comprehend how much of a clusterfuck this organization has become. I have amended returns that were sent in over a year ago that still haven't been addressed. At best, I get notices acknowledging receipt and indicating they need another 90 days to process the return. Clients are getting notices that their 1120 (C corporation returns) haven't been filed when they own LLCs taxed as S corps or single member LLCs/partnerships that have been chugging along for years. What the hell is this?

People are getting penalty notices for returns that were extended and/or filed before the due date. We prep penalty abatement waivers within a week (tops) and include the certified mail receipts, but the IRS takes so long to process them that their automated system puts the account in collections because they never got around to opening the damn mail.

We call in through the practitioner priority hotline and the agents that pick up (IF they pick up) have absolutely no idea what's going on. When I cite relevant sections of the tax code to explain to them why they're wrong, at least half of the time the call is magically dropped. It takes multiple calls and hours on hold to resolve simple issues, most of which are because the IRS dropped the ball.

I just had a client this morning that failed to close on a huge piece of property because the IRS had a lien posted to his account that was resolved back in 2012. Even if it wasn't resolved, the statute of limitations expired in 2018. They actually acknowledged that they screwed up, but oh well... give it a while and they'll clear it up. OK. Thanks.

I went back and added "limp" 'cause I could probably figure out how to put an erect one to good use. I'd have neck muscles like a ninja turtle.

Shit they havent even processed my 2018 returns yet but somehow found the time to come after me for 1200 dollars I owed from 2019.

If it were easy, everyone would do it, and no one would need an accountant. I always figured it was accountants lobbying for more and more absurdity in the tax code. Job security.

A few years ago The State took over the county business taxes. They sent me a letter saying that my business taxes hadn't been paid. When I finally got someone on the phone and explained that I have a copy of the check that was processed by the state. They said that they didn't have a record of my business and to just send in a check. Wrong! If you don't know who I am how are you going to apply a second payment? "I don't know just send it in" was the response. I went to the county clerk and it took a couple months to get it straightened out. Then a couple years ago they stopped taking the paper tax return and went totally online. Now everytime they update the website my password is invalid. This year after multiple attempts to setup a new password I said fuck it. My wife was dealing with cancer and I had way too many things going on to spend hours dealing with the stooopidity. In July I sat down to get it straightened out and called them. Another run around and I may have made a few statements that should not be made while on a recorded phone conversation. The next day I had a visit from a couple of SUV's and the local police. After telling them that their bravado was being wasted on me and explaining the bullshit that I have delt with over the last five years the lead guy gave me his personal number and said that he would personally help me if I have a problem next year. And not to make threats on a recorded conversation.
I guess that threatening to blow up a government building or to threaten government employees is taken seriously.

But they aren’t done with you. You still owe money to help pay for college debt everyone else has.

Couldn't disagree more. If I could vote myself out of a job I would do so in a heartbeat. The AICPA is constantly lobbying for simplicity.

The tax code is absurdly overcomplicated because of the politicians. It's all smoke and mirrors to keep the layman from realizing how bad they're getting shafted.

15.3% of every dollar you earn working goes to social security, plus fed income taxes up to 40.8%, plus state income taxes from 0%-13.3%. Every time you fill up your tank there are fuel taxes built into the price per gallon to the tune of around 50 cents depending on state. Buying guns? There's tax built into that too. Flying? Same. Booze? Bend over. Tires? Yup. The list goes on and on. That's not even touching corporate taxes.

Then, with whatever's left, you get to pay property tax and sales tax on all the stuff you buy. Add it all up and you'll see what I mean.

You're being robbed blind and most have no idea just how hard they're being raped. It kills me.

    Noted.

Expect an audit notice from us next week ;)

I would expect the IRS to answer complaints thus:
“We need a budget increase to hire about 50-100,000 more staff, and THEN all will be just fine.
Taxes will have to be raised to cover the costs of running the larger agency, of course.

    IRS = legal robbery.
We need constitutional protection. 16th Amendment needs to be revoked and replaced with one that protects us, the hard working tax payer. Unlimited power to tax shouldn't be constitutional.

I could get behind a political party running on such a platform.

Here is the 16th, for those that want to see the fine print behind the IRS

The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on income, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration.

People are so stupid. If you ask most people what they paid in taxes for any given year the response you will likely get is "Oh I got back X amount of dollars on my income tax return" They have no clue what they actually paid in total taxes. Some people are so stupid they think the government is actually giving them a gift not even realizing they are getting back money they paid throughout the year.

Not the most well-oiled machine that's for sure.

I started getting an overpayment refund check back in 1995 for an overpayment in the 1993 tax year. Problem was, I was now divorced but the check was made out to both of us with my last name. I would get one every year, call the IRS and explain the problem. Asked that they divide the refund and send us each our own check. They kept sending me a check. Even sent in divorce papers twice as requested to show I was divorced. Still nothing, kept sending me a check for around 120.00 dollars.

So back around 2005, my ex-wife writes a bad check to the post office for some passport fees. Government goes into the system and notices she is still owned money on this tax refund, so they take the 80.00 dollars out of the refund amount and then I started getting a check every year for around 40 bucks still made out to me and the ex-wife with my last name for both. Crazy ex use to argue with me that I was keeping her money away from her by not cashing the check and sending her half. I have not received one in over a year now so I can only assume she wrote another bad check and they went in and took the rest.

That's the scam. The employer takes the money before they see it. If people had to write a check every week to the IRS they'd be pissed. Make them pay the employer's part. Make them pay for unemployment insurance instead of the company. Heads would explode.

I have learned much watching “Nomad Capitalist” videos on utube.
The USA is one of the the only countries on Earth that taxes it’s citizens and their relatives, no matter what country they live in.
I learned about one USA citizen, moved to Switzerland, married a Swiss national, became a Swiss citizen, but retained his USA passport. (Dual citizenship)
He has to pay both Swiss income tax and USA income tax on his Swiss income.
His wife, NOT a USA citizen, owes USA taxes on her Swiss income.
This evil is beyond making it up.

Tread lightly with the Nomad Capitalist stuff. I have a client that went all in on his program. I convinced him to hire Grant Thornton to do an analysis of the strategy and they concluded it wasn't legit. That's the sixth largest accounting, tax and advisory firm based out of London at $6b in revenue.

It cost him north of $100k in legal/consulting fees and he bought real estate in Georgia (the country) as part of the deal. He's still trying to unload that real estate and it took forever to wind everything down.

If it sounds too good to be true it is.

That’s not the worst of it. I know people who are paying less in taxes because of Trump’s tax law and they are freakin pissed that they are getting a smaller refund. 😳

    Seems normal to me-just sayin'.

TN is normal as it comes. In US terms.

I'd check everything else against the going "normal".

    But that is just me.

Full disclosure: TN is where I am headed this year.

It would take a page or two to write out what I have had to deal with to just pay my damned taxes. Nevermind the years trying to renew my driver's license when there was some wanted felon in Arizona with the same name.
Homeland Security runs our driver's license station here. Standing in front of an agent showing a birth certificate, a social security card (with a different number than the wanted guy) and several other documents and getting the ohh well? I figured that I was going to jail for what I said.

Wait until this year. They have been sending out child tax credit checks since last summer. When people find out that they are not going to be able to use that deduction shits going to be funny.
I will wager that the present regime will just relent and allow it. Cuz you know.... Free free free shit for everyone.
Most of them don't pay taxes anyway. The social security "investment" is the only thing that they may contribute to

Yea well the State of Colorado kept losing my State tax filings and payments. I kept having to dig up receipts and copies for them. I was glad to leave Colorado.

My federal tax forms or 40 freakin pages. I’m just glad I have an accountant that knows what he is doing because it is all greek to me. I just provide the data and sign on the dotted line.

After a couple hours of you need to include numeric number in your password. So I changed it and then, sorry your session has timed out. Log back in and try again. You need to use 8 characters. I changed it and sorry your session has timed out. Log back in and try again to get you need to add a capitalized letter so I changed it and get the your session has timed out. Then the... That password is already being used.
So I called them and went through the government phone bullshit until getting to talk to a human. He said that he could see that I have attempted several passwords and emails me a temporary password to straighten it out. I never got the email. That happened two times. I asked them to just give me an acceptable password. They can't do that because my account could be hacked. WT ever loving Fuck? And do what? Pay my taxes for me? Sorry I will send you an email with a temporary password. That's when I said something about going down there and kicking the shit out of you incompetent fucks and blowing up the building.
The next call I actually got a competent person who stayed on the phone while she texted me the temp password and helped me get it straightened out.
When I hung up my wife was wide eyed and said, " you just threatened to blow up a government building". That was a four hour ordeal just to pay taxes.
    What the actual fuck……?
I forgot to say that there's no place to click and get their rules for a password.
I think my password now is something like, Fuckallya'lldicklickingassholes49.

I think we should all demand a bill that would eliminate taxes taken directly from your paycheck. You will get a check, or a direct deposit, as well as a notification of what taxes are required. Each entity has to be paid separately by check or electronic payment. But it has to be made every paycheck.

Once people start seeing how much is actually deducted and having to pay it every two weeks the problem will quickly get corrected on the politicians end.

I made a shall we say " mistake" on my taxes one year. Bastards not only want what you owe them but there are penalties in excess of that amount.

If you haven't had a penalty waived in the last three years you need to file one of these:

    Penalty Abatement Form

Line 4 is *probably* going to be 6651. Can't say for sure without knowing what penalty is being assessed.

    Line 5a is reasonable cause

Line 7 is "requesting first time abatement (FTA) relief."

A good CPA will make his wages in what he can save you . From what he does and saves you, I would rather pay the CPA the savings, than give that saving to the State and Fed. Gov. any day of the year.

Finding a good one is key.

I'm tapped out and not taking new clients. I'm having a hard time finding other firms to refer work to. The good ones aren't taking clients either. Some of them straight up doubled their fees this year. I'm tempted, but I don't have the balls to do that. Not yet, anyway.

    here is the shitty part….

you can be done, all you want, with the irs.

the problem is….they’re never done with you. even dying doesnt get you off their hook.
I can handle my own stuff. I deal with the IRS on behalf of 1400+ clients though, many of which are likely far more complicated that anything you've ever been exposed to. Corporate stuff. Trust stuff. Complex situations involving F-Reorgs, 3115 conversion and Reg D offerings. Things most people have never even heard of, including most IRS agents. That's a problem.

Woe is me. Boo-hoo. I'm just venting. I'll go into the office tomorrow, get my shit done and then wash away my problems with whiskey until April 15th, just like the rest of my peers.

Just having a pity party for myself. Man the fuck up... I know. I don't usually pull this. I'm being a little bit of bitch is all.

I got a letter from them two days ago. It said the "$12,619" they had received had been credited to my account . . . but they had not received my return. They wanted me to: "file today", "send a newly-signed copy", or tell them which "tax form I would like it credited toward".

I found it odd that they had received the check, but not received the return the check was stapled to. I sent them a photocopy of my file copy (newly-signed) . . . and a photocopy of the receipt from the post office for the postage for the return they could not find.

I always thought my file copy was . . . well, my copy. Now I understand my file copy is the second copy - I keep on file - for the IRS.

didn't some guy fly a plane into an irs office in texas in the not too distant past. when you're that loathed, maybe some sort of a change is in order. same as the dmv, they can make your life intolerable, even if you've done nothing wrong and it's their mistake.

the only solution i have come up with is to quit working/earning. and i’m sure they’ll still find a way to nail me for something.

combined with everything else going on…i am tired of supporting their rigged system in which i have no voice. so fuck it. DONE.

LOL..... terrible jokes aside, you know they are hiring 40k new agents this year as part of a major public tracking and auditing effort. It was included in the 1.8T Bill that was passed by the Democrats late last year. So, the IRS is going to double in size, no bueno!
