The US abused the relationship with the Philippines.
Mt.Pinatubo devastated both of the major bases there (there were a few smaller ones there as well).
It was as much a US decision as a Filipino one.
The US was paying the philippine government less for multiple bases, covering thousands of acres, then they were paying for the small footprint in Rota Spain.
Duterte was a fucking idiot. Then they turned around and voted in a Marcos.
Any place in the world where the Spanish have had influence have massively corrupt governments.

It's more important to us than the Philippine Navy.

They let Clark go into the toilet. The mayor of Olongapo and the Subic Bay caretakers didn't want it looted and stripped like Clark had been.

Funny how once the Chinese started dicking the Philippines Uncle Sam didn't look so bad.

Besides, Chinee sailors no give good tips in Olongapo and no have PX card! No bouncy bouncy for Chinee Navy.

We deployed there in 83 or 84 from Okinawa. Had to leave one guy behind until they cured him. Had every STD known to man.

Of the 70 guys, I think there were seven or eight divorces within a few months of our return.

Only semi-related, but they disassembled and moved the Cubi Bar (Navy Officer's Club at Subic Bay) to the Museum Of Naval Aviation at NAS Pensacola, then reconstructed it. Pretty cool thing to see if you're there, with all the incredible artwork that went into the squadron, etc, plaques, and the actual bar itself (and have a sandwich and a beer, too).

It’s hard to explain to those who’ve never been back then. There’s a huge difference in the stories that start with ‘I shit you not’ and the ones that start with ‘this one time in PI’. Those that have been say ‘oh, yeah…. That place’.
