    Gunsmithing Hardened Parts

Re: Hardened Parts One detail the heat treating article doesn't mention is case hardening where the metal is rapidly heated to a shallow depth for a very short time. The interior of the part doesn't get hot and the surface of the part is quenched because the heat is transmitted very quickly...

Gunsmithing Looking for setup tips - inlet for forearm rail

Re: Looking for setup tips - inlet for forearm rail I once built a jig out of plywood that located a guide slot along the bottom of the stock. The jig was tricky since the stock doesn't have square cross section. I started with a piece of plywood about as long as the barrel channel. I...

    Gunsmithing weatherby Mark 5 build?

Re: weatherby Mark 5 build? With some help from a friend I built a 284 winchester on a Mark V six lug (non magnum) action. No effort was made to true the action. I haven't even lapped the lugs yet. On my good days it shoots 0.6 to 0.8 MOA. I suspect the gun is actually more accurate than...

    Gunsmithing blasting anodized parts

Re: blasting anodized parts By the way if you go the sodium hydroxide route use a glass container and do it outside. The bubbles coming off the aluminum are hydrogen gas and in an enclosed space you have an explosion hazard.

    Gunsmithing blasting anodized parts

Re: blasting anodized parts You can dissolve the coating in a sodium hydoxide (lye) and water solution. Watch it while you do it, the solution will also dissolve aluminum. Start with a chunk you don't care about and practice.

    Gunsmithing Reducing Locking Time

Re: Reducing Locking Time There is a very complete technical discussion on lock time in Stuart Ottenson's two volume set titled "The Bolt Action". (at least I think that's the title) Ottenson also lists lock times for a variety of actions and discusses the strengths and weakness of various...

I think I just had an epiphany (bolt vs gas gun)

Re: I think I just had an epiphany (bolt vs gas gun) I don't have a gas gun so I have no data. I am curious as to whether or not the variation in muzzle velocity for an AR is generally larger or smaller than a bolt action in the same caliber with as similar a configuration as possible. If...

7 WSM or .284 for new build?

Re: 7 WSM or .284 for new build? The cartridge length for the 284 loaded with 180 grain Berger hybrids can be quite long, over 3 inches, and fits nicely in AI 300 win mag magazines.

Best Tactical stock/grip fit for small/medium hand

Re: Best Tactical stock/grip fit for small/medium hand I too have small hands. I eventually bought a McMillian A3-5 adjustable because the forend was relatively skinny compared to some other stocks I tried. I did the inletting myself and moved the action at least 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch...
