    Gunsmithing Barrel runout question

When you’re done collecting data and testing theories and calculating stuff.... put some loaded ammo in the lathe and run some more tests and calculations, and report back. You might be surprised to find we’re shoving some pretty crooked stuff into relatively less crooked holes.

One of them is the bottom of the ejector spring.

What am i giving up with a Tikka vs custom actions?

I know, wasn’t directed at you, just for clarity.

What am i giving up with a Tikka vs custom actions?

My point is they’re freakishly consistent, even compared to custom actions.

What am i giving up with a Tikka vs custom actions?

Correct. Measured actions, not chambered barrel spec.

What am i giving up with a Tikka vs custom actions?

Actual headspace measurements from recent Tikkas, only stopped because I didn’t want to get another binder out.

Custom bolt action barrel not centered with stock

Agree completely. Trigger alignment is probably not related to the barrel alignment at all, but is related to bedding which is the first place I’d look for both issues.

Custom bolt action barrel not centered with stock

It’s pretty easy to roll an action a degree or three during bedding and have the trigger off center.

Custom bolt action barrel not centered with stock

Alignment down the channel also depends on the method used for dialing the barrel. If they dialed at two points at the chamber end only, and didn’t index on the vertical plane can show up, if the barrel has a little English in it. I’d ask the shop to remove the bedding and see how it sits in the...

Gunsmithing Proof CF prefit barrel on Tikka T3x - Bolt Closes on no-go gauge but not on Field gauge

Did you mean .002”, instead of .020”? Might’ve been a typo. .002” would be appropriate, .020” would definitely lead to case stretching and separations. You probably know, but for anyone that might be reading, head separations can be pretty dangerous and potentially hurt you and the rifle. If...

Gunsmithing Proof CF prefit barrel on Tikka T3x - Bolt Closes on no-go gauge but not on Field gauge

Your headspace is likely long, which isn’t a big deal if you’re setting your fl sizing die properly. If you don’t know exactly how much back you’re setting your shoulder, for that chamber, you need to.

Thank you for the kind words guys. I’m honored to be mentioned along side some of these legends.

    Remage barrel not grouping

Gotcha. Seems like you’ve scratched the mechanical stuff off the list. If your concentricity is good there might be something funky in the throat. If you pull the barrel and hold it up to the light your eye will see a faint line where the freebore starts, depending on diameter. If it’s not...

    Over Pressure or Old Brass?

If the brass was fired in a different, larger chamber, and/or your die doesn’t size the base enough you’ll have hard bolt lift that mimics pressure.

    Remage barrel not grouping

You can get a scrub mark like that if you don’t pull the ejector. I also prefer a small fortune float over a single dollar one.

cerakote a barrel (no action) need tips

I machined slave cylinders but you can also wrap the threads with safety wire and form a hanging loop, then wrap the works in high temp tape.
