Here is the deer I shot yesterday morning. 175gr smk from not quite a hundred yards. he was hopping up the mountain to me and stopped, I shot, he turned around and tumbled about 50 yds(not because he was alive but because it was very steep).
He was slightly quartering but basically head on, I aimed for the inside shoulder and fired, the bullet blew the top off his heart, and destroyed his left lung, then exited just in front of the offside gut. the blood trail was incredible, with large pieces of lung all down the hill. would have been a great trail to follow, but unessesary.

Yeah, I was on the match/hunting bullet thread just a couple weeks ago, and after reading up a bit, I figured I'd give it a try, mainly because thats what I shoot most and I'm good with em.
I shot an elk two weeks ago with em too.
We weren't above the timber though, we were close, maybe a thousand feet or so.

Here is another one from my"team", my brother shot this one at sunrise 10-17-09. It was standing at the top of a ridge 230 yds out, he fired a single shot (300wsm 180gr hornaday interlock 62.0 H414) and hit him through the neck/shoulder area. he dropped and rolled 75yds down the hill toward us. His antlers stopped him when they hung up in the brush. sorry, this is the only pic I have right now, shown on the left next to mine for comparison.

Just curious, how was the performance on the elk? clean pass through, hit bone, didn't exit, etc? Thanks!
    308 Win?

The performance on the elk was great, it blew through a rib on both sides and broke one shoulder, it went through him, but its hard to tell (@ 560 yds) and yes, it was a.308 win, 175 smk, 44.5 gr of RL-15 savage 10 24" in 1-10. then sent a second shot between his horns, (spike only unit) now they wiggle.

Ok. Was the second shot needed to finish him off? Did the bullet expand at all, or just pencil through? I'm guessing around 2700 fps at the muzzle and at 560 yards, 1780 fps and 1230 ft/lbs. I was curious if this velocity was enough to open up the HP.

Yes, he would have died at any moment, he was laying there head swingin from side to side, but he was 560yds away and I had a long hike to get to him and didn't feel like risking him not being there when I got there.I'm sure it opened up though, I did find a few small jacket pieces inside.
Funny you should say pencil through, as I butchered up the deer yesterday, I examined the entry hole, which wasn't much more than a pencil hole.(slightly damaged) but the wound channel was very tramatic, heart and one lung were detached from the rest of the organs, and you can see the exit wound in the second pic.
