Is that too heavy?

Should I go with a 80gn SMK? 75gn AMAX?

Would be fun to lob pills out to 1K but if I can get a solid 800yards with decent performance that will also do.

I have a Bartlien 7.5 twist 5R 27" blank for this build.

Will be running AICS 223 mags so OAL is a concern.

Thanks,

Vu

Vu,
I think you would need to check with Berger or sierra to see if the 7.5 will stabilize the 90's. Years ago when they first showed up most folks were using 6.5 to stabilize them. With more barrel and the AI you might get away with it in a cut rifle 7.5...
I think Sierra recommends a 6.5.

You might want to try the 80's at 1000.

Vu, any throat that gets a 75AMax to the lands from 2.4-2.5" will work. I've them in that range and it still allows you to run even the 50Vmax's in the lands and keep enough bullet in the case.

My FF loads with 75Amax's in Virgin hulls run about 2950'ish and they still make it to the 1K line with no issues.

How long will the AICS mags allow? </div></div>

Yup..spoke with Jerry this weekend at the range. Going to get with him about pushing the 90s. From what I understand he tied the F-Class national record or something this past weekend with his 223 pushing 90s @ 2850.

I caught him passing by and he indicated I can do it it with my 223AI and a 26" tube out of a 7.5 twist.

Read what I actually said

Let's make it simple.

Can you read a 1/2 MOA wind change at 1k?
If not what will you gain?
What pressure are the 90's running at?

Ignoring pressure is stupid.

I know I had a good hard look at projectiles over 80 and with a 30c temp swing I would have to load hot/cold for every batch of powder and then keep track of POI changes. I would still be pushing pressures even on a cold day on loads which would make any difference. What for?

I've got a 31" Bartlein, and the 80s will beat the 90s all the way out there. 2850 seems a bit optimistic for the 90s as well. I load single feed at 2.55" to the lands for the 80s, so there is plenty of room for the 90s. I shoot the 80s at a mild 2950. SMKs suck by the way...go with the Bergers.
