A few coyotes

Got the following as an email, thought Id share.

COYOTES:

These guy's have been busy this winter!!!

This is Tony and Terry Russell, and Rocky Longbrake. {Dupree, SD }

You don't think we don't have a coyote problem in western South Dakota well think again!

These three boys shot over 400 hundred coyotes in western South Dakota from the first of
November to the first week of February 2011 with in twenty-five miles of my home town.

There are 208 coyotes in this picture and the balance of the coyotes had mange. I do truly
thank these three boys for all the help in the control of these predators!

I'm a rancher in western South Dakota and with out their help with predator control it would
be impossible to raise livestock. (see pictures below)

Think there are 4 cats in the pic.

I am 75 miles as the crow flies from Dupree. I have seen 8 coyotes since end of Oct. We have had the mange bad since 2000 around here. Has slowly been moving south as indicated with that email.

Them boys enter every coyote contest around. They were booted out of a local one in Dec because one of their yotes was just a little bit tooooo cold for the time frame they were allowed and jaw was broke to get the wooden block in its mouth.

That's a mound of yotes! That is more yotes than was killed at the World contest in Belen, NM this year by all the teams present! We have some great yote hunting here in AZ but I may have to take a trip to SD this year.

They must be all on the west side of the state. We have hunted the middle of the state for years with little luck. DOn't get me wrong, there are dogs around but nothing worth crossing state lines for. We have focused our attention in North Dakota and have found good numbers.

I will have to ask Dakota about this picture when i see him today Rocky is his little brother. I want to see if that is really him or not. Dakota said that they have had a good year but did not say they have shot that many and i will have ask him about getting kicked out of a tourney. I know of a couple guys who all they hunt is east river and they are in the mid 200 so there must be a few on the east side. By hunting the middle of the state i wonder where that is becasuse any where along the river is completely covered up in yotes.

Coyotes were a hot selling item. 621 coyotes were offered, and 578 sold, at an average of $44.83. It appears that the early demand for coyotes seen at the NAFA auction has continued.
Bobcats sold at 100% of the 132 offered, at an average of $572.21. Looks like cat prices are back to the high levels of a couple years ago.
Muskrat averaged $5.28, which isn’t bad for western ‘rats. Only a couple hundred were offered, and some appeared to be freezer ‘rats. Mine were fresh and averaged over $6.25.
Raccoon (231 offered) averaged $18.92.

If the numbers stated are correct that would be 4 1/3 coyotes every day from Nov 1 until January 31, including blizzards, 20-30mph wind days(which we have had a number of this winter) etc. Unless they are running a long trap line or using snowmobiles or aireal hunting??? It is legal for a 'landowner' to hunt them with a plane or paraplane on their own land but need a state permit to hunt anywhere else and they aren't easy to get. Also picking up everything you shoot would be an ordeal this winter with the snow and wind we have had.

My understanding is there are 2 Longbrake teams, one of them got booted for above mentioned 'technicality', don't know which one. This info from a team member that shot in the contest, I did not see it first hand.

Guessing they are hunting the Cheyenne River Reservation and breaks along the Cheyenne River???

Brother from Kalispell, MT hunts north of Great Falls towards Canadian border. Feds come in with the helo 2 wks ago and shot 162 one day. 34 of them within a mile of one draw/drainage where because of the snow the deer were forced into and the yotes just slaughtered them in the deep snow and had their own venison buffet going on. The gunner had a busy day!

You tain't gonna find enough coyotes in my AO to keep you busy very long or pay expenses!!! Fur buyer in Bowman, ND was paying $20-25 for good coyotes in Dec, another $5 for skinned and another $5 if they were fleshed/stretched. Them prices don't buy much gas at current prices.

I had recieved this picture an sent it to a couple of buddies I hunt with. One that knows them said that these guys use snowmobiles and planes to kill a lot of them. So there not all called in.

Ya i am going to show Dakota this picture as it does not look like rocky is one of them in there but it is a bad pic of the people. It just seems like he would show me this picture i see him on almost a daily basis. Hell we lived together for 2 years in mobridge and i have been to the ranch a few times and dont reconize that building but that could have just been built. I know they do alot of hunting south of pierre and in that country and they are around the dupree/ eagle butte area but not quite as far south as the cheyenne river. They shot a bunch a few weekends ago around the Moreau River. i agree with picking them up the few i shot this year laid where they died walking through ass deep snow for 10 dollars as i dont skin or any of that stuff just is not worth the time or effort. I find those numbers hard to believe to.

I just talked to Dakota and those are the numbers but over a longer time frame than was stated. He said they got 50 for the really good one and 20 then 10 for the lower grades. None were shot with planes that is all i can say about that. From mobridge to eagle butte there are lots of yotes i see some on the trip down there almost every day.
