I decided to play around with some 300 blackout loads.

200 grain Makers Expanding Subs
10 grains of H110
2.20" OAL
Winchester Small Rifle Primers
Averaging 1057fps (10ft from muzzle)

Trued Remington 700 Tac
16" 300blk

100 yards since that is as far as I would use them.

Medium was a 1# bologna pack covered by a 10oz leather wrap. Backed it with a piece of 1/2" particle board and then several milk jugs.

Round penetrated to the 4th jug, damage to the first 2 jugs was substantial. The last 2 just had normal penetration holes.

I got expansion from 9 grains and up but the accuracy was best between 9.6 and 10.2.

Tried some others today.
Ok, so these two were fried at 65 yards
#1- Winchester 1892, 24" barrel in 357 mag.
Handloaded 140 grain XTP at 2405 fps (avg)
This round was hard to capture, it shredded through a 1/4" piece of leather covering a 1# bologna pack and then 6-gallon water jugs!!! It was laying on the ground behind the 6th jug. The first 2 jugs literally exploded into multiple pieces. It expanded to 60 caliber with 90% weight retention.

#2- Henry Big Boy 45 Colt
Handloaded 300 grain XTP. I did not get a velocity on these but they are incredibly accurate and POWERFUL.
This on, using the same medium went to the 5th water jug with a hole in the back of the jug. I would use this load for anything in North America. The first to jugs essentially disintegrated. It expanded to 70 caliber with 95% weight retention.

I plan to use both these for deer/bear this year.

Cool tests man, and thanks for sharing the results.

I have no personal experience with Maker*, but several of my pig hunting buddies have really liked the results on hogs with their .264 offerings.

*I do have some Cavity Back experience, and they were a fantastic bullet out of my 6.8 on hogs (105 MKZ). Cavity Back just has Maker make the bullets to their specification...which I'm sure you probably know.

I had similar results with the Maker 220s out of a 16” with N110 in Starline brass. My go to load is usually with Nosler 220 Custom Comps and 10.2gr of N110, which comes in at 1040fps. With that same load, because the Makers have more bearing surface, the speed dropped about 100fps. Didn’t change the POI/POA substantially inside of 100yds, but noticeable beyond that.

I had 3.5’+ of water jugs lined up and the bullets opened up and just went right on through. Didn’t capture them in the sandbank after.

I think of subsonic expanding bullets like broad head arrows. Likely to cause bleeding that will result in a kill, but a 110 Barnes is just a more ethical way to kill quickly.

I dont find supers to be any more effective than a well placed broadhead ;-)

In fact a well placed arrow will often kill just as quick as a rifle shot. Regardless, its fun to test

I few years back just for fun I took my rabbit gun out for hogs with a 400 gr Barnes backed by 98 gr of 4350. Only got two hogs because more wouldn't line up in a nice row, still not bad for one shot. Gotta love a Rigby.
