I'm trying to get into the long range game. I just ordered a Remington 700 .308 as a base gun. Now I have to decide which scope I want to put on it. I currently have an AR-15 with a vortex viper 6.5-20 x 44, the one that was on sale for $280 at camerlandny. Now, I can either relocate that scope to the 700 or get a fixed 16x SS for the 700 and leave the viper on the AR. If its going to make a big difference, I could pony up the cash for a 3.5-15x SS, but I really don't want to spend that much.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Do you know enough to decide whether you want first focal vs second? 16x SS will work, but a PST 4-16 or 6-24 would be better, or a SIII 6-24.

I've never dealt with "real" scopes so I'm not sure I would know the difference.

Are you saying the viper pst is better than the SS 3.5-15? They are fairly comparable in price for the 2.5-10x44 viper pst vs. the 3.5-15 SS. I could stretch my budget to those buy I would rather spend the money on a fixed. Is it really worth the money to get the variable scopes? I can pony up the cash if its night and day difference and at my novice experience level, I will be able to see the difference.

Primary Arms 4-14x44 Mil/Mill FFP ~$250

I bought one to try out for my CZ455 PT and ended up ordering a second one to replace the SWFA fixed 10x on my R700 AAC-SD. I can't afford another HDMR and I was really impressed by the PA offering - enough so that I ditched the SWFA. Variable FFP scopes are just vastly more useful for me.

ETA: It has a 30MM tube and the side focus goes down to 10yds. Glass is (subjectively) every bit as clear as the SWFA 10x if not slightly better. Does not noticeably darken at max mag.

This from another thread.

I'm a big fan of primary arms. I had a 1-4x scope and it worked great. I have a ton of red dot sights too. However, I was thinking that their Chinese made scopes wouldn't be as good as a SS or a Vortex Viper.

I've owned a grand total of 2 bottom end SWFA 10x scopes and both of them were... less than optimal for me. I learned of PA through searching for a T1 knock-off for my M&P 15-22 (the sight and the rifle are going strong on 2 batteries and >3000 rounds.)

I couldn't argue with the price or the features, but ultimately I understand that you get what you pay for. IMO a $250 PA 4-14 FFP beats the $300 SWFA 10x.

I've not owned any Vortex products, or any of the SWFA offerings outside of the non-HD 10x from SWFA:

Well a past version with a simple Mil-Dot anyway.

One of these days I'll get out to the range again and I'll see if I can get some pics through the optic.
