Originally I was just going to start a thread inquiring about folks with first hand knowledge and experiencing using Aguila SSS sub-sonic ammo suppressed and the rifles/pistols they've used it in successfully. What I'm trying to prevent is perhaps not an issue at all, but after looking at that big 60 grainer and imagining what it would do to a 2.9 oz all aluminum can if it got a little squirly right out of the muzzle, I have to ask...

Also, I was hoping to get some 'cleaning/maintenance talk' going with regards to suppressors that are NOT designed to come-apart, be-it a .22lr can, or a .30-cal + unit...How do you get yours clean?

Re: baffle-strikes and suppressor health in general

Well, I am not a significant authority on suppressors or sub-sonic ammo..but... there are a lot of shooters here who can help. I am absolutely not-a-tech-cmptr geek either but doing a topic search should help you immensely. I have to admit tho, I do not find doing a search an easy task. In fact I'd rather jog a mile with a 50lb pack on, than do a search here or on any other site: I just have no skill at doing it correctly period.
Thus I ABHOR the idea of doing a SEARCH.

----------------------

I have a Gemtech Outback 2[GT OB 2] and if I recall [..dubious at best] correctly the use of Aguila[a] is not recommended. And if this is not correct I am sure responses will re-align my thought's w/o me getting verbally gutted.

The GT OB 2 I have can not be taken apart for cleaning BUT I can -and will but not for a couple of weeks cause I am going to Alaska to pan for gold, fish for Halibut and Salmon- return my Outback to GemTech and they will rebuild it, into a taken down unit for cleaning plus they will offer a choice of baffles in Stainless or Titanium.

I use all brand's of .22 ammo but 'a'. I do not like light hollow point sub-sonic's and the winchester's are amazingly filthy, but since I bought a case of them I will use them up ....in my rifle...vs my Ruger Mark 2.

Those at GemTech told me I don't have to worry about cleaning my 'aluminum' suppressor for quite a few thousand rounds...and so far I have not even fired a 22-brick thru this kute, lovable little suppressor.

Anyway, I think I am kinda wondering in my thoughts, getting a little tired so I will back out for now but if I think of anything that will contribute...I will post my thought.

In Jest:
By the way there are some hard-case, hard-headed, snot-nosed kids profoundly educated in the use of profuse profanity here, with hearts of 24 karat...note their message not their tone...

Sincere:
It is virtually impossible to remain uneducated or stay ignorant by being on this site and jumping in.

Re: baffle-strikes and suppressor health in general

I've shot some of the Aguila SSS stuff through my Marlin rifle and it was definitely not stabilized... Keyholing through targets at 50yds and making a nice hum as they flew downrange...I have however had great success with the Remington Subsonic ammunition. It's pretty accurate, very quiet when suppressed, and expands quite nicely since it's a hollowpoint.

Oh and an ultrasonic cleaner would work pretty well getting it cleaned out I would imagine.

Re: baffle-strikes and suppressor health in general

My cousin is dating a guy that I shoot a lot with and he cleans his suppressors with an ultrasonic cleaner. Said it cleaned it right out. Might have to finagle with it and run water through it to clean the stuff out once its run through a cleaner, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Re: baffle-strikes and suppressor health in general

I have shot the 60 grain Aguila through my Ruger Mk II and 10/22 with a YHM Mite and had no problems. No indications of a baffle strike. The bullet holes in the target are round (bullet is stable) out to 50 yards (can't say past that, have not checked).

In terms of Ultrasonic Cleaners,
BE CAREFUL, with anything that you put in one that will rust!
A good ultrasonic cleaner will strip all oils/protectants off of whatever you run through it. I have seen items start to rust within a matter of minutes of being taken out of the cleaner. Most cleaning solutions are water based, so the metal will be wet, and with no protection, oxidation starts as soon as the air hits it. If you have any bare steel surfaces, then you need to immediately get them dry and get some type of protective coating back on them. With certain suppressor designs, I could see this as being a potential problem.

I have never worried about cleaning any of my sealed cans, I guess I have always just been part of the shoot it and don't worry about it crowd.

Best of Luck,
M Richardson
