I need some advice about which bullet in my 300 WSM to get out to 1000yds. I shoot a Savage 12BVSS (bull barrel) with 24 inch barrel. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: best bullet for 1000yds with 300 WSM

We shot my 300wsm at 1250yds couple weekends ago loaded with 190smks and Rld22. Any of 175 and up bullets would do fine out to 1k.175smks,178 amax,190smk,185 bergers,210s so on...

For A magnum I'd recommend nothing lighter than a 190 grainer. I know some guys shooting 190's out of .308's. If your soaking up magnum recoil, make it worth it and use a heavy high BC bullets!
210's get my nod...

Out to 1000 I'd shoot 187bibs over anything else available.

If I remember right,the 300's peak out @ 210gr. in performance.I alway's shot a 208gr Amax when I was shooting a 30cal.

The 190 Berger VLD's sure do well for me, and I shoot in windier conditions that most people do out here in West Texas. I can push them fast enough that they have just barely less wind drift at 1,000 yards than the 210 Bergers, and they have quite a bit less drop. The 190's don't recoil as hard, and you don't quite get that slight amount of "torque" you feel when pushing the 210's a bit. The 190's have performed for me.

i agree with this. the bigger bullets have a higher BC, no doubt, but I've been shooting the 185 VLD's. with the speed i get out of them vs the 210 they are almost exactly the same wind drift, and less drop to around 1k yds.

now don't get me wrong, i will be building a 338 something, and will shoot the 300gr VLD's if they ever get released;) so i like the heavy bullets, but i have had pretty stinking good luck to around 1k with the 185 gr vld.

it's all about give and take, speed vs drop vs wind drift vs barrel length vs barrel life vs recoil vs weight, etc, etc, etc...

any way, good luck and have fun!

The Berger 185vld i used a few years ago were super consistent out of the box. Bearing lengths averaged .003" variance with an extreme of .005". I stopped seperating them. They shot really well.

I own this weapon as well. the issue you will have is that the Barrell is a 1:13 twist, so the heavy bullets dont stabilize...
I use 61.5 grains of Varget behind a 155 Berger VLD and it does great.

I have the same model and its a 1:10.

Op, I shoot 185gr berger vlds out of the same gun you have, but my barrel is 26", with the 185 use n560 and ccibr2. They shoot best for me .oo3 into the lands. Good Luck, its a hell of a gun. One more thing, get a brake.

Re: best bullet for 1000yds with 300 WSM

Howdy. I too have a Savage 12, mine has a brake. I have fiddled around with bullet jump, bullets and powders. My first time on a 1000 yard shoot (at Quantico Shooting Club's Range 4) I hit 18 of 20 at 1000 yards with winds from 5-7 mph. I surprised myself. The best group setup for me so far is a 175 Sierra Match King HPBT (BC = .505 bullet, 64 gr of H4350 powder, .05 bullet Jump (OAL = 2.82 inches) in Win brass and CCI BR2 primer. This generates 2960 fps measured in several sessions.

This gives me .3-.5 inch groups at 100 yards and is what I used on my first 1000 shoot.

A couple shooters at Quantico suggested I might like a heavier bullet so I tried work ups for the Hornady 208 gr A-Max (BC= .648!!!) and the Sierra 200 gr Match King (BC = .560!).

I got amazing velocities out of R-17 powder for both bullets but the groups sucked (I tried different loads and OAL/jumps.). This may just be that I have not found the right mix for my rifle The 200 grain Sierra MK with R17 (63.2 gr = Vel of 2990) generates great ballistics but poor groups - so I will keep at it.

My work at finding the best load mix confirms what I think all of us know: Rifles are like women. You have to get the right mix to get the response you hope for...
