i dry fired my 77/22 to observe the bolt and saw movement upon
hammer strike. i never paid attention to this b4 reading of a fellow on another sight looking for shims. well after smoking
over the bolt it made sense to put a shim were the bolt
pivots and to push the forward section of bolt toward the "breech" thus making bolt tighter. Well i cut a piece of coke can to shape and slid it between the two sections and observed
there was less movement at "breech" bolt interface upon dryfire and the bolt handle "snugged" up when locking the bolt. So i put two
shims in and was unable to lock up the bolt, too much shim.
Am I on the right track with this concept of shimming my bolt?

You've got the right idea. I did this same thing about 2 years back, and really didn't notice any real improvement in how the rifle shot.

"shimming bolt", i found 3 or 4 threads on RFC. i searched back to beginning of forum and worked forward. there are mni pages and i dont know how to link or tell you how to get there.
there is talk of making "bolt tighter" does not necessaraly
mean the head space is tighter, yet a guy said tighten bolt and then shim the bolt at (bolt/base of bullet)to achieve proper head space. seems to me if all is tighter there is more consistancy, versus a loose/flopy bolt and "loose"head space.
im not yet sure if this works for it will be saturday one day b4 my sillouette cometition to test this out...at the out door range i will bench rest and compare notes.
for info im the kind of guy whom takes bulk ammo and sorts out the loose and tight stuff, lil esentric to some.
for the fellow asking if its a feeling or for real, ill be able to comment more after saturday. but as now i "feel"
confident with better group at indoor range..standby for saturday and my thoughts

ok, field report, i had very nice groupings for a breezy day, better it seems than b4 the shim. Sunday was the comp. and only shot average score
but that was me and not the weapon. Im going to order shims, the
aluminum cant handle the pressure for after about 70 rounds it begins to tear.

Re: bolt shimming ruger m77/22lr

an aside to topic, i find that im able to shoot 7-8 out of ten shots at 25 yrds off hand with no "pressure" the ability to shoot inside a silver dollar size target,ie. practicing , yet when i get on "the line" and its "shooters make ready" my legs start to tremble and i fight to stop the shakes. ive been shootiing different disaplines
for over 15 years yet this silouette stuff fs me up. Any tips/words i can use to calm me down?, at the "line"?

I do drink coffee and smoke cigs could this be the answer?. or did i just answer the question? if i stop both for one morning/day i know ill have the shakes...lol
