So, I decided to stop by one of my local big boxes on the way to work today... I'm the annoying customer that stops in often just to look through whatever happens to be behind the shelves and compare things... even when im not intent to purchase that day, or what um looking at for that matter.

Anyway, they had a few new (for the store) products in today that I took a look at. First thing I asked to see was the Burris Tac 30; I had heard some decent things but wasn't expecting much. First, the glass was surprisingly nice, a much more polished look than I anticipated. Damn batteries were dead and didn't feel like waiting for the young clerk to find replacement, so I was unable to see its illumination.

*On to the strange part... As I was holding the piece up I immediately noticed that something was wrong on its 1x setting. I adjusted the eye piece and realized the magnification had changed due to the diopter being stiffer and as it is one unit, they both turned simultaneously.

I thought I had caught the issue but after returning to 1x the image appeared magnified to at least 1.5x... I don't believe that it was close enough to actually call a 1x by any stretch. This may have very well have been a defect only specific to this display model. (And,Yes the mag level lined up with its magnification number, it wasn't stuck or anything of that nature) I did show this to another employee behind the counter who also noticed it. Curious if anyone else has seen this who has either looked through

I have that scope and haven't noticed that problem. I don't believe it's exactly 1X but very close to it. Thee focus ring on mine turns independently of the power ring.

I think what I stated may have been slightly misleading...
the focus was separate, however the entire eye piece turns to magnify the scope... so because the mag ring was looser than the focus ring it turned accidently when trying to focus. Essentially, on this one, you would have to use toa hands to adjust... one to hold the mag ring steady and the other to turn the diopter. I did not mean to assert that they were one unit.
I'm happy to hear yours felt closer to 1x, again it was nice looking. It may just be the one I was looking at then.

I would really like to see the Mtac ... I'm familiar with it only through reviews which I have read good things. I have no idea why the store got in the older model, they already have plenty of glass at the tac30 price point in similar style. I am limited to 3 big boxes and around 3 local guys, I try to stop in often to look at new stock items... unfortunately the really big box store is like a 2-3 hour drive so I have to make a day trip out of it.
I did see a Mtac scope yesterday, but all they had was 3.5-10? Or something like that. Reticle was nice and thin but wasn't overall that impressed. It did have some asshole's fingerprint on the eyepiece though. Hopefully they will stock the compact Mtac to look at soon.

How far was your target? It is a common quirk with 1x scopes when looked at in the confines of a room that they seem to magnify things, while in reality this is a result of the projection of the image through two focal planes. Optically, your aiming eye is "closer" to the target by the distance between the two focal planes. At long ranges, the effect is negligible, but at very short ranges it is quite noticeable. So if you're looking at the desk in front of you through the scope, stuff will look larger because optically, you're something like 8 inches closer to the desk with your "aiming" eye than with your "naked" eye.
