SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - The headline really isn't a joke. A Sanford truck dealership is offering a free AK-47 with the purchase of a truck.

General Sales Manager Nick Ginetta tells FOX 35, the weapon won't be sitting in the passenger seat or a gun rack when you sign the paperwork and get the keys, instead you get a voucher. "Now you take that voucher, you go down to Shoot Straight. You present the voucher. They will fill out all federal and state forms, and a background check. If you are eligible for that weapon, you'll be entitled to it."

Ginetta says if guns aren't your thing, you can have 400 bucks off the truck or vouchers for other stores. Will it work? "People are calling us, don't believe it. They want to come in and see it. We have some people that don't believe it. In fact, as I told them, listen; you can do this on your own. You don't need us."

Already there's been a bite. Craig from Longwood heard about the deal and came on down. "I'm getting ready to buy a truck because I need it for pulling my race cars. I figured this is a beautiful selection. I come here and I'm getting a free gun!"

Ginetta told me they're doing this as a salute to veterans, but maybe they should have asked a guy next door at the VFW hall. "Them guys next door that are giving away AK-47. I was shot 14 times by that rifle. It's a hell of a rifle. Kills a lot of people. They've got no business giving those rifles away."

A little research shows truck owners just happen to like the 2nd Amendment. The deal runs through the end of the month.

FOX 35 talked to the Sanford Police Chief about it and he says as long as the rules of gun ownership are followed, they're not concerned about because legal gun owners rarely give them trouble. The only worry they had was that a crook might steal an AK 47 and use it in a crime.

Yea... This place is right down the road from me. While I like the idea, I can understand the Vet's point... It being the Commies' favorite rifle and all. Still, ya gotta love it! And, of course, a rifle never killed anyone by itself.

Shoot Straight is where I used to do some of my firearms shopping during my formative years. I am from Lake County, FL. I don't like AKs that much, but it is an interesting deal.

It's funny you mention that. Down here you don't see rifles in the back window of anyone's pick-up anymore. I'm thinking that became illegal here some time in the past when I wasn't paying attention...

Totally illegal to have an 'uncased' firearm visible to the public, up here.

Except when hunting (in the hunting area, not traveling to it) and when at a range. Otherwise, the LAW states it must be cased.

And Restricted weapons need to have a disabling lock as well as a case lock. Freedom, eh?

That's incorrect. Unrestricteds don't need to be cased during transport. In fact, it's perfectly legal to have a gun in a gun rack up in Canada. Most people think it's illegal though, as nobody does it anymore.

If you leave your vehicle unattended, the gun must be out of site. So you couldn't leave your gun in the gun rack while not in the vehicle.

Some years ago the Bank of Boulder used to do something similar.

If you'd deposit x amount into an account for x amount of time (can't remember the particulars), you could get a Weatherby rifle.

Grr Argh.

OK, three things here.

First, an AK? really? Spikes tactical is just down the road. Come on guys support the locals. Not that I am a big Spikes fan by any means but if I had to choose I would take a Spikes over a AK any day. Based simply on local economics.

Second. Shoot Straight? There are better dealers around. If you want to pay $200 more and have crappy customer service Shoot Straight is the place to go, if not, there are quite a few options around central Florida to work with.

Third: "Craig from Longwood heard about the deal and came on down. "I'm getting ready to buy a truck because I need it for pulling my race cars. I figured this is a beautiful selection. I come here and I'm getting a free gun!"

I live in Longwood, my brother builds pro-touring cars at a shop in Apopka. I must find this Craig and talk some sense into him.

I am sorry if this came off as a rant, but this is the reason that we have the saying "all the nuts roll down to Florida".
