Thinking about doing a 16-18" barrel on my .308, before putting a heavy barrel. Just to see if I like a shorter rifle. The barrel will be a factory sporter. Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

you will love it. they are so much more mobile. the pic above has a 17.5" barrel.

Think it will make a nice handy field/target rifle. And be able to do what I want it to.

Seems like it would make it more accurate as surely it will stiffen up the barrel. I know you will like the mobility. I was about to start a very similar hunting rifle project to gain the ultimate in a light weight/agile hunting rig, but sent the money elsewhere. I have a deer hunting buddy, and we enjoy stalking where every once counts at the end of the day. Go for it.
