Does anyone know from experience if switching from CCI to Winchester primers (both plainjane LR) causes a practical difference in a 308 load?
Particularly 175's at 2700 with CCI currently, will I see a noticable difference if I roll the same with Win primers?

I'm not talking benchrest bullshit of "I get groups that average .1moa tighter with this primer over that primer". Actually, that particular example woul dbe fine, because that would say they're close enough that I couldn't shoot the difference

I'm looking more for "I switched and didn't notice a difference in my workhorse 308 175SMK load"..........

Re: Difference CC vs Win primers

I compared them a while back and this is what I found.

Rifle specs
700 SA .308 Rock Creek 11.27 twist, 21.5"

Load
175 SMK all with 44.6 grains Varget
Lapua brass once fired, bumped and neck sized
Load .010 off the lands

CCI 200: Av 2682 Es 22 SD 12 for 5

CCI 250: Av 2711 Es 62 Sd 34 for 5

WLR: Av 2685 Es 19 Sd 12 for 5

Now THAT'S exactly what I needed! Almost mirrors my load/setup (my 26" 1:10 Rock Creek explains the velocity difference between your and mine, but the difference (what difference?) between the primers should have no effect for all practical purposes.

Thank you sir! Made my day.

I’m curious, what is your load and velocity with the extra 4.5” of barrel?

Re: Difference CC vs Win primers

I run 42.2gr IMR4895 and the rest of the load is the same (Lapua, 175SMK ~.010" off the lands), but I FL size with a .002/3" bump.

Oehler told me 2696, SD 13 X5 last I checked, but Mr Pesja tells me that at a BC of .504 I'm actually more like 2730fps.

I used to run Varget, and all the loads I used in 308 and 223 that match the IMR4895 loads ballistically are for the most part 5% higher with Varget than I4895.

Pretty cool that by drinking the optimal charge weight KoolAid has me loads that I can switch powders, now primers and even brass and have the same results down range and dope-wise. (I add half a percent more charge if I load in Win brass)
