I own a beater ass 02 Cavalier. The heater core went bad on it. I bypassed it three weeks ago because I was adding a gallon of water every 30-40 miles. The reason I bypassed the heater core was to bide time till after finals, at which time I will replace it. That will be this weekend.

Every time it has been below freezing the thing over heats for a minute and then goes to normal. I think this is because the coolant got diluted by me adding water to it all of the time which was causing the thermostat to freeze so tonight I replaced the coolant to keep it from freezing and the thermostat.

My question is this, is it OK that I spent $3500 on a SBR and suppressor and another $900 on a Whiskey 3 in the past 2 months when I drive a beater ass shit fuck clunker worth $1500 that is fucked up all of the time?

I am beginning to question my logic.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

In answer to your heading question: NO
In light of the fact you are just a kid, I will say I was just about as dumb when I was that young. Even today I believe money is printed to spend but I have more wisdom in managing it properly. Transportation is vital and there is nothing wrong with a beater, not knocking you for that. I have drove more than my share of shitboxes. The first car I ever purchased was a 69 bug I bought for $250, hell the only time it had heat was in the summer. If you don't learn to save now you are in for some hard times. Don't get married until you can control these lapses of sanity.
Sorry to be a buzzkill and sound like your dad. The rest of the teenagers that tell you "fuck yeah man ,rock on!!!" are not your friends and are probably just as shit broke as you right now. Good luck to you and learn to prioritize.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

I think you fucked up majorly. Hiring a hooker and knocking it out until you catch everything she has should have been your number one priority. Guns and cars are so last semester...

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

The guns will always be worth more than that car, so just make sure you can get to work or the range.
On another note, with a cold engine pull the radiator cap, start the engine, let engine warm enough to open t-stat, the coolant level may drop, add more coolant to keep system full, do this till level stops dropping. Your system may have air in it, wihich can create an "air lock", and disables coolant flow.

Sounds like a sound plan to spend your life womanless, living in your mom's basement, and posting on internet forums. Good job.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

Plenty of people waste money on cars.....

That being said if its reliable and not gonna cost you grades/job then fuck it.

Driving a clunker will eventually leave you stranded, do you really want to take a chance getting stranded on the way to a range with your expensive toy's?

There is a lot to be said for driving a nice vehicle, I don't buy a new truck very often, I just bought anew one and the last one I bought was 12 years ago.

IMO clunkres are too expensive to own, they are always breaking down and requiring work and when you lose time from work because you drive a POS, that costs you money.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

Your problems have nothing to do with your car. Instead, you don't seem to have any options. Money is power. Power means options.

Nothing else matters. You currently have no options. Fix that first.

Notice, I didnt' say sell the car and buy a new one. Or sell your guns. Figure out how to give yourself options.

Because here is the most important thing. You hit a certain age and getting good pussy has more to do with how many options you have available to you than anything else.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

In the process of mediation during divorce of ex #2, the mediator asked " so what did you do with all the money you made in the last 3 years?" SInce the divorce was entering year 3, that was a good question, and everyone knew I had made a bundle from a company I was starting.

I said " I spent most of it on liquor, women and fun, the rest of it, I just wasted".

The ex-judge cracked up and I got a pretty good deal out of it. Thanks to the good Lord, no kids with that crazy....

OP - get your education finished, make money, make options, Find a Good Woman, then worry about what you drive. If she is All That, what you drive won't matter.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

Here is my no BS answer, fix the car, drive it until you(not a mechanic) can't fix it anymore, cars are the worst investment money can buy, keeping them going is a PIA, but a required part of life, your weapons are a investment too, but not only of money but sanity, so unless your walking keep your weapons.

Well said.

I have a nice car and a beater truck. The car is a Volvo and has about 130k miles on it, there are times when it has not been proven as reliable as my 270k miles, 22 year old Ford F150.

As long as they have good tires, run well, and get me to/from work I am not worried about them. If I can't get to work I'm boned, even if that means taking a sportbike to work in January.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

Hang onto your guns. My dad and I maintain our cars by ourselves just as well as we do our guns and they have never given us a problem. Oil changes and tire rotations/checks before they are ever needed will keep a car running strong. Its all about preventative maintenance. I will never sell my carry pistol or the M1 I was given from my dad. Cars I would not have a problem selling off if push came to shove to get a cheaper one in hard times.

Gun's get pussy too. Probably more of the kind you need than flashy cars.

Re: Do I have my priorities straight?

Id keep that car but start saving right now. Im a big car guy, almost as much as I love guns... and it sucks to have a crappy car. Id at least buy a used car for about 7-8k... you can get a really nice used car that would last you for years to come.
