Anyone here ever handled mercury before? It’s a crazy metal. Super heavy. Crazy stuff.
Yes. I agree with all you said. Especially the weight. Freaks people out that such a small amount of what appears to be liquid could weigh so much. Drop some on a smooth surface and it sends BBs in all directions as it splatters and rolls at the same time.
When I was younger, way younger, and a thermometer got broken Dad would scrape up the mercury and my brothers and I would take turns letting it roll around in our palms while he cleaned up the broken glass. When we got bored with the game it got tossed out into the yard. Times change.
Mercury can also be used in an outdated technique to separate gold from powdered ore. Then getting the gold out of the mercury gets a bit dicey. There are a few ways but they involve vaporizing the mercury away from the gold to produce dor'e. Mercury vapor is very bad. Some hobby miners still use these methods. Some use them safely, some not. Someone with supposed access to the supposed spare mercury may have been supposedly mailing it to his supposed mining buddies.
And another conspiracy is born. Cigars for all!

A federal search warrant reveals that Sunspot Solar Observatory was shut down as FBI agents conducted computer forensic searches for child pornography.
The source of child pornography was traced to an IP address used at the observatory and a source within the building observed a computer with "not good" images on it, the warrant states.
An investigation by the FBI revealed that a janitor is the main suspect in the search, however he has not been charged with a crime even though his name is on the warrant.
The warrant states the suspect would use the observatory Wifi and a personal laptop to download the child pornography.
A limited number of people have access to the observatory from dusk until dawn, which helped narrow their search.
The observatory in the mountains of southern New Mexico had been closed since Sept. 6 because of an undisclosed security concern, but reopened on Monday.

That cover story is so lame. We at least expect something believable.
Now they may frame some janitor for bad pictures... but they don't shut down the observatory and the post office for over a week because a janitor used their wifi to look at some illegal naked pictures....
