EDM M96 on order, no longer a place to shoot?

OK, I have an EDM M96 on order and there is no longer a range to really flex the platform in the Austin area with best of the west no longer allowing 50BMG's.

I am getting a good deal on the rifle (It's one of the ones with tooling marks). The question is what to do? Should I see if they can make it .408 Cheytac? Do I just go with a traditional rifle (DTA, AIAW) and sell this on the hide for what I paid unshot or see if Bill will ship to the purchaser?

There is something sexy about the .50 BMG that's always made me want it. I can technically join the Austin Rifle club and shoot it on their 200 yard range but I feel that's a waste.

Already have a few medium and long range sticks which is why I didn't go DTA/AIAW to start.

How far out are you able to shoot at the local range? You can always take the .50 out to BLM land and shoot it, if it's easily accessible. If you're limited to an actual range that allows long distance, you could go with a GAP build or AI AW...maybe even swing a trade here on the Hide

The EDM is a fine rifle.

If it was my money, I would be looking close at the DTA HTI. It is significantly lighter than the EDM.

why don't you just get the barrel and bolt? Best of both worlds. You will have a hell of a rifle in two calibers with one scope. what is not to love? You can use .50BMG, .50DTC, .416Barret, .408CT, .375CT, and .338LM all from the same rifle.

Take possession of your 50 then buy the caliber conversion to 408 or 375-408.

Then you have what you want and when you want to drive however far you can shoot your 50 too.

Several local ranges, best has out to 1K (yes, I'm blessed). The Austin Rifle club only has 200 yards which is where I would be stuck shooting the .50 now when other then the rare occasions where I get to visit a friends family ranch or a rock quarry a neighbor works at.

Between the DTA HTI and M96 I liked the breakdown design so I can fit it in the safe.

Is there BLM land in Texas? I miss that about New Mexico...

There is little to no public land in TX where you can shoot a rifle. You've gotta be near a range that has what you want or own the land.
