Electronic Ear Muffs or Plugs?

Re: Electronic Ear Muffs or Plugs?

Well I wore the Sordin units for about 5 hours straight at the range today. Absolutely comfortable. Like others have said, there is a feint white noise in the background but you quickly get used to it and don't even notice it after a few minutes.

As far as sound quality, I thought they were great. When you hear yourself, you do sound a little muffled, but everyone else sounds GREAT!! I wore them with the mics pointing forward and you are able to hear everything around you. At the low setting, it sounded a little lower compared to not wearing any muffs. On the highest setting, it was not loud, but you are able to pick up sounds from very far away. I bet you can use these to spy on people's conversations, I didn't try but plan too next time

I thought they did a great job at stopping all of the loud gun noises you hear at the range. I shot everything from a .44 lever gun to a suppressed .308. The suppressed .308 was the loudest gun by far of the day, and I felt the units did a great job cancelling those loud sounds. I think there are guys out there that would probably double up with earplugs under these, but I felt they were not necessary.

I believe at about the 4 hour mark, the units started beeping on me. I found out later it was a built in system to warn you before they shut off after prolonged use (in case you leave them on by mistake) so they shutdown on me. I hit the power button again, and the units memorized my prior volume settings.

Overall I think they are awesome. I can't really compare them to anything else as these are the first electronic units I ever bought. My only complaint is that for some reason when you talk, you sound a little muffled to yourself, but nothing that would drive you nuts.

Re: Electronic Ear Muffs or Plugs?

My Peltors have been going strong for over 10 years. I love them. They are comfortable, allow a decent cheek weld most times, and the electronics are still working great. I don't use double hearing protection, though maybe I should. I have tinnitus from the service. I like that I can turn on and adjust them on the one head set. They don't have buttons on both ears. Just a preference.

Re: Electronic Ear Muffs or Plugs?

I got the behind the head set. It's not possible to put them on backwards unless you ride the short bus.

Did a comparison over the weekend against $50 Peltors and the Howard Leights. They are nicer, but only marginally. Not 4x better by any standard. I'm going to keep them anyhow to see how well they stand up to hard use.

Re: Electronic Ear Muffs or Plugs?

I give 100% recommendation for the msa sordins with the gel ear pads. If you cant afford them, the howard leights are a great affordable alternative.

The next level would be custom fit electronic ear plugs, but they are like 800 bucks!!!

Surefire Sonic defenders are the bees knees as far as I'm concerned. I can comfortably shoot the Marine Corps' loudest man portable weapon (SMAW) repeatedly (7 x in a couple hours) with no I'll effect. I'll stand next to a M2 all day with them. They have no batteries to wear out, they let you hear normal conversation, but block out anything harmful, and they're $13. Only down side is no amplified hearing. If you have quiet pro for your common you can retrofit them right into the surefires though. I have several pairs and won't leave the wire or go to the range without them as I lost a lot of my hearing in Iraq when it wasn't "practical" to wear ear pro. Their newest version has foam instead of the rubber cup style and they are comfortable all day long. Oh and they don't interfere with eye pro, head gear, or cheek weld.
That said, the peltors and sordins are good pieces of kit, but bulky, need batteries, and they get in the way of cheek weld, eye pro, and head gear. For $13 they're worth a shot in my opinion.
