Ok, this is on a car forum I frequent, this guy came on and said this.

"My Enfield is dead on @850 yrds, but it gets a little iffy past that, but it is still a .303, not one of the rare .308's.

If you can find one, they are pretty damned cheap, usually a hundred bucks or less, and very solid and reliable.
One word of advise, though, they make a fiber stock for them. It looks better with it, but the rifle isn't nearly as accurate without the full wood stock that they came with.

Do I call bullshit or what?

Re: Enfield accuracy.

I hjave quite a few enfields of different Mk's including a Mk IV No 1T Sniper. The sniper is the most accurate (1.75-2" @ 100 yards) None of them are 850 yard rifles. I would have to see it to believe it.

Re: Enfield accuracy.

I would be surprised if you can find one for $100 or less. Here are 20 or so with the cheapest around $250-300. There are a lot of very well cared for Enfields out there and having seen some proficient shooters using them with iron sights in competition (albeit up to 500yrds) I don't look down my nose at them.

Gale McMillan was once asked if he could build a .308 custom bolt rifle more accurate than any .303. Initially he laughed at this and said he would offer a free rifle if he couldn't. On researching just what was winning at bisley up until .308 was forced on UK shooters and noting the scores, he realised that the task in hand was futile. Yes the .303 can in the right gun and hands be deadly accurate at extreme ranges.

The Lee Enfield in No4T configuration is still seen each year in serious use at the McQueen Sniper Competition during the summer Imperial Meeting, shot in Class B.

Re: Enfield accuracy.

Most MILSURP rifles I have played with will shoot to the sights with MILSPEC ammo - but the zero range is often around 300 yards and with lighter projectiles, they will shoot high at 300. Not terribly tight groups mind you, but you can ring an 18 inch steel plate pretty regularly if you can see the sights.

Enfields are as accurate (or inaccurate) as the next rifle. If it is a No.4 MkI, then it might be a little more user friendly due to the aperture rear sight. Still, 850 may be a little ambitious. I am guessing this guy has also never caught anything other than a 15 pound bass either.

Might be more fun to let him run on with it a while.

Re: Enfield accuracy.

Every weekend throughout the summer you will still see No4's being shot at Bisley,...

All the way out to 1200yds and winning things

:)

Last weekend a competitor shot iron sights on his .308 No4 against AR15 clones alongside me in Civilian Service Rifle. He did pretty damn well!

Re: Enfield accuracy.

My No.4Mk1 is extremely accurate rifle with 174smk's. I've hit steel out to 600yds with mine and 800 seems perfectly feasable. It shoots 1.5moa pretty consistently at 100yds.

SOG has them in their current catalog for $69.

Yes the standard 303 Brit round with its 174 grain bullet can reach out to 850 yards and shoot somewhat on call, say minute of car door.

My Pattern 14 Enfield is my most accurate historic rifle when shooting surplus ball ammo (HXP), a true MOA rifle.

I'd say the first post is right on with my experiences.

Best you make the journey to the UK and perhaps the Imperial meeting.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised just how well these rifles shoot at long range.

Aalso read "The Lee Enfield Rifle" by Maj EGB Reynolds. Page 59 refers to the official trias conducted in 1900 at a range of 2,200 yards. The results are an eye opener!

Do bear in mind that the Bisley complex remains as originally set out for open sight shooting out to 1200 ( originally 1400+)yds.

Re: Enfield accuracy.

I've got a fullsized #4 in .303 and I don't think you'd be able to hit a garage door at 850 with the iron sights. Granted, I haven't done a lot of long range stuff with it (I'll throw it in the truck for a backup during deer season) but just based off of what it can do at 50 yards to 100 yards - with iron sights- I would say no way. I take it we're all talking about Enfields that are mounted and scoped out?
