I picked up an MTU contour bartlein that needs to go on a SERIOUS diet. Any idea on the number and size of flutes to maximize weight lose while not looking stupid or impacting accuracy.
1+ on GAP. I ordered the same barrel and maker for my 300 win mag. George is going to do the flutting for me. Just have to wait to get it back. It's been only 3 months, but who's counting.

and if the barrel was totally exposed ....you could get it finned...
6 flutes is what you want done with a 1/4" or 5/16" ball mill. On a contour like that you can take them fairly deep and really take some weight off with loosing rigidity.
Thanks Bobby--that is what I was thinking--although I believe my smith will be using an end mill (the one that looks like a small circular saw blade layed on its side).
