I picked up an MTU contour bartlein that needs to go on a SERIOUS diet. Any idea on the number and size of flutes to maximize weight lose while not looking stupid or impacting accuracy.

TIA.

1+ on GAP. I ordered the same barrel and maker for my 300 win mag. George is going to do the flutting for me. Just have to wait to get it back. It's been only 3 months, but who's counting.

Re: Fluting MTU for max weight reduction

flutes......not all flutes are the same....

i'm partial to radius bottom and beveled .....

and if the barrel was totally exposed ....you could get it finned...

i'm just sayin.............

Re: Fluting MTU for max weight reduction

just go with a lighter contour

that would be my suggestion

after having a couple of MTU and nbrsa #17 contoured rifles

lighter starting contour is better overall for weight reduction

and it saves , $$$ for other things

my .02 cents

Sharp edges make for a great back-up weapon!

Too late, the barrelled action already exists. Just trying to lighten it up.

Re: Fluting MTU for max weight reduction

6 flutes is what you want done with a 1/4" or 5/16" ball mill. On a contour like that you can take them fairly deep and really take some weight off with loosing rigidity.

Re: Fluting MTU for max weight reduction

Thanks Bobby--that is what I was thinking--although I believe my smith will be using an end mill (the one that looks like a small circular saw blade layed on its side).

+1 for GAP and Krieger barrels. Check their websites.
