Garmin unveils tactix 8 smartwatch: Stay active, stay mission ready

Rugged tactical watch offers two sizes, speaker and mic, and rucking activity to keep you ready for any mission

OLATHE, Kan./February 13, 2025/Outdoor Wire – Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) today announced the tactix® 8, its next-gen tactical smartwatch. Available in a new 47mm case size and traditional 51mm size, tactix 8 adds dedicated rucking and dive activities, as well as a speaker and mic to create the ultimate tactical smartwatch. Built to a U.S. military standard (MIL-STD-810) for thermal, shock and water resistance and a 40-meter dive rating with leakproof buttons, users can now take tactix 8 to new depths. And with incredible battery life, it’s easy to always be prepared; the new 47mm AMOLED display offers up to 16 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, while the 51mm solar model with an always-on display offers up to 48 days1.

“Whether you train for a mission, or your mission is training, tactix 8’s premium design and innovative features like the new rucking and dive functionality make it the ultimate tactical GPS smartwatch on land, air or sea.”

–Dan Bartel, Garmin Vice President of Global Consumer Sales

Field-ready features

  • Advanced design: Available in your choice of a 51mm or new 47mm case size, tactix 8 features leakproof buttons and a new sensor guard to help protect essential sensors. Premium materials like a titanium bezel and scratch-resistant sapphire lens are built to endure, even in the harshest of conditions.
  • Built-in speaker and microphone: Make and take phone calls from the watch when paired with a compatible smartphone. Voice commands like “start a hiking activity”, “set a timer for 5 minutes”, “save waypoint” and more can be activated right from the watch—no phone connection required.
  • Dive capabilities: Dive in with a 40-meter dive-rated case and support for scuba and apnea dive activities.
  • Rucking: This new dedicated activity profile allows users to input pack weight to better understand the physical exertion associated with rucking. In addition, a new pack weight feature allows users to add pack weight to various activities like trail running, hiking and walking, which disables VO2 Max recording when carrying 2kg or more.
  • Ballistic solutions: All tactix 8 units come preloaded with Applied Ballistics® (AB) Ultralight solver and are compatible with the new AB Quantum app. For advanced solutions, tactix 8 Elite integrates the AB Elite solver.
  • AMOLED or enhanced solar: Choose between a bright AMOLED display or an always-on display with a solar charging lens that harnesses the power of the sun even better, resulting in up to 50% more solar power than previous models1. Both models also feature refreshed graphics.
  • Advanced mapping and navigation: Users can view terrain contours on TopoActive maps for a better understanding of terrain. A newly integrated map interface allows users to easily customize map layers to get the most out of their navigation. While exploring, enter a distance on the watch and receive suggested routes to stay on track and on time with dynamic round-trip routing.

Lead the charge

Ready for any mission, tactix 8 is packed with premium mapping features to help users stay on track. Preloaded TopoActive maps provide multi-continent mapping from around the world while an Outdoor Maps+ subscription (purchased separately) provides users with premium mapping content, like satellite imagery, public land maps, hunting units, burn zones and more directly on the watch. SatIQ™ and multi-band GPS help provide superior positioning accuracy—all while optimizing battery life. Before training, users can create or find existing courses in Garmin Connect™ and seamlessly sync them to their watch to get turn-by-turn directions.

During night operations, the smartwatch provides a built-in multi-LED flashlight, providing quick access to a bright, steady light in either white or green. While in Night Vision Goggle (NVG) mode, the display dims to levels functional to the primary user (including those wearing night optic devices) but nearly invisible to anyone else.

In sensitive locations, users can utilize Stealth Mode, which turns off wireless communications but still collects distances traveled and biometric data without recording location data. Leveraging this feature allows the watch to be used and even upload logged data – while concealing its location, which is typically visible through popular mobile training apps.

Train for the mission

In addition to dozens of dedicated activities like rucking to help users stay active, tactix 8 can help users power up their body’s performance, endurance and resistance to injury with targeted strength training plans, real-time stamina tracking, sport-specific workouts and a full range of built-in sports apps.

Every morning, a training readiness score can help determine if it’s a good day to go hard or take it easy, while advanced training metrics like endurance score, hill score, VO2 max, training status and more can help gauge overall performance2. Loaded with 24/7 health monitoring features, tactix 8 includes wrist-based Pulse Ox3, Body Battery™ energy monitoring, jet lag adviser, advanced sleep monitoring, nap detection and more. Upon waking, users can receive a morning report that provides a customized look at last night’s sleep, their training outlook and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Status. All tactix 8 models are also compatible with the ECG app4, an FDA-cleared app that can help users record their heart rhythm and check for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) right from their wrist.

Reach new depths

The tactix 8 smartwatch is at home on land, air and now sea thanks to its support of scuba and apnea diving up to a 40-meter depth. The scuba diving activity tracks entry and exit location of dives and provides divers underwater navigation through a tilt-compensated digital compass and supports multiple gas mixes up to 40% oxygen. Apnea mode provides freedivers and spearfishermen a suite of underwater alerts and timers that are designed to help improve their diving and situational awareness as well as track the location of each dive. Leakproof buttons, also new to tactix 8, allow divers to feel confident operating the smartwatch underwater without risk of damaging the unit.

Applied Ballistic integration

Tactix 8 comes preloaded with Applied Ballistics® (AB) Ultralight solver, giving users access to advanced aiming solutions for long-range marksmanship. Users wanting enhanced solutions can purchase tactix 8 Elite, which integrates Applied Ballistics Elite Solver. Available for use with all tactix 8 smartwatches, the new AB Quantum app provides users with profile, target, and ballistic data management as well as the ability to use a smartphone as an additional display.

Aviation features

Both civilian and military aviators will benefit from tactix 8’s Direct-To-Navigation feature, which allows users to navigate straight to a location or waypoint or use the “Nearest” function to activate a path to a nearby airport. Additionally, pilots can access aviation weather, including NEXRAD radar, METARs and TAFs to see winds, visibility, barometric pressure and more directly on their smartwatch5.

During airborne operations, Jumpmaster can be used for three jump types: HAHO, HALO and Static. Set the watch to dual-positioning mode, and it will simultaneously display two sets of coordinate systems, such as MGRS and latitude/longitude, on a single data screen.

Available to order on Garmin.com on February 21st, tactix 8 models have a suggested retail price starting at $1,299.99. For more information, please visit garmin.com.

The short version...
  • Speaker & Microphone
  • Higher display resolution
  • Longer battery life
  • 47mm and 51mm sizes
  • Applied Ballistics Ultralight unlocked on all (Elite unlocked on the Elite sku)
  • New Applied Ballistics features to match up with the new AB Quantum app with new functionality like bidirectional profile sharing
  • New Rucking Activity type
  • 40m dive rated

This seems to be getting closer and closer to the Descent series. Seems like the only difference now is the wireless air integration and wireless underwater messaging on the Descent since you can unlock AB Elite on the Descent.

The Descent has more full featured Dive capabilities.

The Tactix is more appropriate for a recreational diver. Additionally, the Tactix has a limited set of Aviation features that aren't available on the Descent.

Makes sense. I like having the full featured dive watch with the air integration and AB Elite. Not sure most of us would ever use the aviation stuff, but glad it is an option for those that need it :) Thank you for the answer!

If we already have AB elite through another device, will it be available or unlock on the non-elite Tactix 8?

No, it will not automatically. Ultralite will, and you can upgrade from there or buy the AB Elite model.
Ok, not a big deal.

If I send a profile to the watch that is already using a custom drag model, how will that work? I know Ultralite by default doesn't have the custom drag models, but if the profile is coming from another device, will it work?

Then you will need to switch it from CDM to G1 or G7. But the data won't be lost.

I just ordered one through our Rep, I'm looking to T&E the AMOLED model to gain some experience on them :)

Richard

I got the tactix 8 because I shoot, fly planes and scuba dive. It checked all the boxes. I gotta say the aviation futures are VERY minor. I haven't taken it diving but I'm sure it'll do great.

ABQ is very cool to have. I will probably end up buying the license for it. I am trying to find out if I can attach a LRF and the calypso mini to it, so I have both the data though. I haven't gotten an answer on that.

Or be able to manipulate the wind control on a Fire 4000 since you can't change it on the Fire 4000.

Battery life is meh. I got like 13 days on the 51mm MIPS version. I'm trying another watch face now that is giving me more battery life. I never thought that would have been an issue.

so far so good. the silicone band is also messing up my wrist. I need to get the overly priced Nylon one.

ok that's my review lol

The dive functionality on the Tactix 8 covers the vast majority of divers, but it's not the same as on the dedicated dive watches. It supports recreational diving up to 40 meters, single gas and doesn't support air tank integration that is available on the Descent line of watches.

You can pair an AB compatible LRF with the Tactix or with AB Quantum. You can also pair the Calypso AB Mini, but not the standard Calypso Mini, with the Tactix or with AB Quantum.

If you pair the Tactix to the AB Quantum app you don't need to purchase a license for the app. It will use the license from your watch so if you have the Ultralight license on the watch, you'll have that on the app. If the watch has the Elite license, they the app will as well. FYI - this does NOT work the other way around. You can't purchase a license on the app and use it to unlock the watch.

Yep. I'm a rec diver, so that is all I need. I really wish you guys uploaded the aviation maps on the tactix 8 as well. I tried but doesn't seem I can do that. Also another suggestion for the team is, if aviation mode is on, maybe have a mode for the o2 sensor to be on as well (so I can monitor my o2 while flying at high cabin altitudes or unpressurized planes)

I have the ultralight, and didn't know the Elite from watch will carry over to the app. That's good to know. Thank you.

and lastly. Is it possible to have two devices paired for applied ballistics? (AB Mini & LRF) - So this way my range & my wind is constantly being calculated for a solution.

Thanks for the quick responses!

@Garmin

Curious… (dons tinfoil hat)…

What data from the watch is sent / shared with Garmin or any other party(ies) that is not me?

If info is sent/shared, can that be blocked/disabled without disturbing any features?

You can turn the Pulse Ox sensor on manually, but I don't believe you can configure it to automatically turn on. I'll pass that on to the team.

Yes, you can pair both an LRF and the Calypso AB Mini at the same time.

If you don't pair the watch with the Garmin Connect mobile app or use the Garmin Express desktop app to sync data to Garmin Connect then nothing is sent to Garmin or anyone else.

If you do use Garmin Connect, then you can choose what data is sent to Garmin and with whom it is shared. See our Privacy policy for full details.

Can you elaborate on this. I was planning to buy a tactix 8 47mm amoled which only comes as AB ultralight. I plan to pair a vector x LRF and a Calypso Mini AB to them. What are my options to get Elite options on AB Quantum? I thought I could just buy the license in the app on the tactix 8 watch?

You can buy the license for the watch in the app. But if you buy a subscription to the app that does not upgrade the watch. You need the license on the watch.

I'm trying to figure out the version of Tactics 8 to pair up with Vector X and reading through the i-net seems that the only one that will work is the Solar Elite. Was anyone able to confirm it working with the AMOLED version (that only comes with Ultralight)? Thanks!

I would recommend when pairing an Elite device as such to upgrade the Garmin to Elite. It may not be necessary, but this is going to give the best experience. When pairing an Elite Vector X this will not unlock Elite features on the Garmin. So to make sure everything matches up the same, its best both are on the same License level.

So, it is possible to upgrade AMOLED to Elite, this is a great news!
Yes, you can upgrade it to Elite.

But don’t they have to buy them from you? Do you offer upgrades to them for free?
They license the engine from us. But they pick and choose what features, and how to integrate them. This is why you see things like CDF Calibration on Garmin devices but not Kestrel (I believe it is coming to them in the future). The manufacturers license the AB Engine and then make internal decisions on how to manage it.

No, we do not offer free upgrades for devices. For one many of the devices are managed in house. We don't write the Garmin software they do. We don't write the Kestrel software they do. We don't write the Sig software, they do. We don't write their firmware updates either they all do in house. So many of those upgrades would need to come from the manufacturer. But on top that, it would be outright wrong to just go behind the companies backs and start unlocking user devices for free.

@DocUSMCRetired - trying to figure out the workflow between Vector X and Tactix, would all calculation along with the profiles be on Vector X and reflected/synced to the watch, or same weapon profiles will need to be set up on a watch, and watch would do the calculation?

They calculate internally on their own.

If the profile is on the watch and you're just using the Vector X as a rangefinder then you don't need any profiles on the Vector X. The Vector X sends the ranging data to the watch which does the calculation.

If you want to see the results on both devices then you need the profiles in both places so they will both calculate the solutions.

When the Vectronix Vector X LRF integration occurs with AB Quantum, the Vector X LRF will be able to pair with the Calypso mini AB. How would the workflow look with three devices, ie. Vector X LRF, mini AB and tactix 8 watch. If i pair the mini AB with the Vector X LRF, the LRF would display a full firing solution including wind. How could i get the same displayed on the watch. Am i correct in assuming a full firing solution including wind would only be dispayed on the device the wind sensor is paired with?

The Vector X does not transmit wind data, and does not act like a bridge. So you need to pair the Calypso to the device you want it active in.

Correct, you would pair both the Vector X and the Calypso to the watch in order to get a full solution with wind on the watch.
