I went on the Hogdon site and they show 45.5 grains to 47.5 grains with SIE175 MK bullets. I have shot several powders, Varget, BLC (2), H4895, and trying them all out for OCW. I'm disabled so only shoot bench most at 100 yds and steel to 2 and 300 yds. I have a Remington 700 true action, PTG bolt( bol t is not easy to work using knob).SHILEN #7 MEDIUM BBL 1/10 26IN. IN A Bell and Carlson medalist 6 stock. A couple questions : 1. Has anyone done a load development wi H cfe 223? 2. Why is the PTG BOLT SO HARD TO USE ? ( MY GUNSMITH said to just use the base of the bolt with my fingers. The bolt slides great but when I use the bolt knob it binds. I've manually worked it about 1,000 times, polished it by hand . The thing is it slides so easy with my fingers on the base? I'm not using it for hunting but I wouldn't want to depend on it for a second shot. Any suggestions?

Agreed. Sounds like the timing is off, or possibly not closing it all the way home when trying to rotate it?

I've been shooting a lot of CFE223 in my Steyr lately. Academy had some on clearance +$10 off every $50 purchase over the holidays. Like many other spherical powders; I have more stable SD with a hotter primer like WLR than milder CCI #200/#250.
155gr A-Max/ELD-M 49.50gr @ 2.84" COAL
178gr ELD-M 45.5gr @ 2.88" COAL

Really like how the 178gr shoots with it. No comment on the temp stability as it's cool here in Bama. Pretty boring load development. Vanilla book loads with the bullet seated out near the lands shot well.

Kind of OT here, but as a "WTF, why not?" effort, I loaded some 2000MR with the 70gr RDF bullets the other day (hell, didn't even change my die settings from the 75gr ELDM I normally load). 2000MR - 26.2grs/70gr RDF/NT brass/205M. Didn't grab any velocity numbers, but there was no lack of obturation whatsoever of the case neck, and just a hint of the primers starting to flatten (still with very rounded edges).

I really just wanted to see what kind of obturation (or lack of) I got on the case necks (if any). Sent some down range this past Friday, and "tickle me pink and fuck me silly" if they didn't perform quite well. I was shocked, since everyone says they can't get them to shoot (and I'm sitting on 1k on them) when I moved out to farther ranges (went to 850yds). Still saw a flyer here and there, but otherwise, they shot surprisingly well on steel (rabbits at 540yds were easy when the wind was steady).

Anyways, it's not CFE223, but it is another ball powder to consider with heavies...(I couldn't get CFE223 to work well with any heavy bullets in .223.)
