Quick and dirty, first you need your constant, Lets say your target is 12" Divide this by 36" and you come out with .33. This is your constant, multiply this by 1000 and you have 333. Measure the target in Mils, and lets say you measure .5 mills. take 333 and divide by .5 and you have 666 Yds, easy.

Once you have the basic concept down you should go out and practice milling out your targets and making UKD range cards. Then shoot your targets for what you have ranged them at by milling them out, I think that this is very important because it will really give you a good feel for distances and will help you learn more quickly and effectivly. Every school in the Marine Corps that I attended did not allow use of range finders. I believe it is extremely important to become proficient at ranging targets without the use of a range finder first, after you have achieved this then a range finder is a nice tool but don't become dependent on anything that that requires batteries.
