Finishing up a customer build, he wanted his Bell and Carlson Varmint/Tactical stock camoed out. So figuring on a pattern I went ahead and shot it in various colors of Ceracoat then hung it in the oven at low heat (150 degrees) to cure, checking on it about 15 minutes to make sure everything was ok. After about 30 minutes I check on it and the outer layer of fiberglass is separating in various places. Called B&C and they told me that their stocks will only take 120 degrees befor damage. I then asked if I could purchase a stock minus the hardware and they refused. What a day

Re: Interesting thing happened today

Wow, that is a very low heat for any composite material, most resins (epoxy or polyester) will reach temps of over 150 degrees when curing, I don't see why it would delaminate at such a low temp. I wonder if there is a outer material they use that is seperating?

Sorry to hear that, if you take a few picks I can recommend a way to repair it.

Yeah I called the guys at NIC and he figured they must be using a really cheap adhesive, said McMillan and HS Precision don't have any problems. I called the customer today, had him come in and left it up to him as to what he wanted to do. Told him I would be more than happy to buy a new stock or I can repair this one and offer him a warranty if anything ever goes wrong. He opted to have me repair this one, shouldn't be too big a job, I've had some of the nastiest stock breaks come in for repair. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Re: Interesting thing happened today

It gets hotter than that in a vehicle in the summer. I wonder how hot the stock would get if you left the rifle out in the sun on a really hot summer day?

Re: Interesting thing happened today

Unreal. I shot within 4 degrees of that in July. My bolt gun stays in the trunk of my car. It must get 170 degrees in there in the summer. Any chance of that affecting the bedding?

Re: Interesting thing happened today

After doing some intensive modification to my one B&C stock it doesnt surprise me. There is an outer shell about 0.010 thick and once you get through that it is just pits everywhere. Definitely seemed very cheap to me.

Re: Interesting thing happened today

Well B&C stocks cant be used in Arizona then.
Sorry to hear that happened.

On their site it says, quoted verbatim...

"Leaders in Synthetic Stock Design & Technology
and
Manufacturer of the Highest Quality fiberglass, Aramid & Graphite Gun stocks Available Today."

That's a tall claim.

Im surprised some of the big name smiths with 6+ month back logs even accept work on HS and B&C stocks.
Once you work on them you see why I say that.

btw, just called to hear it from the horses mouth...

"Our stocks crack (and fail) at 125 degrees."
