Iodine in the gas tank?

Dumb question for your automotive/chemical types.

I was listening to the radio today and they had a segment on stupid crap you pulled over the weekend.

Guy called in and said that his wife is screwing around on him. As revenge he said that he poured iodine in the gas tank of the boyfriends 2010 Dodge Viper and put trucker bombs (apples filled with drywall screws) under each of the tires.

I can see how the tires would get roached, but what the hell does iodine do to an engine?

Re: Iodine in the gas tank?

Well, have some 24+ credits of chem under my belt (started off doing chem engineering before swapping to mech) and iodine would have the same effect as chlorine (mentioned above) but how effective it is in that application (the idea is to create rust) really boils down to concentration, i.e. how much he poured in vs how much fuel is in the tank.

The caller sounds like a pussy though, fight your battles man to man don't do pull some cowardly act like that.

Re: Iodine in the gas tank?

I've heard about the sugar and bleach things, but never iodine. You would think with gas prices the way they are, no one in their right mind would want to waste perfectly good gas. He should have brought a syphon hose instead.

Re: Iodine in the gas tank?

I suspect (I could be wrong) this might be an old kick-back version of sugar in the gas tank from when there were lead additives in gasoline. The iodine would form a precipitate with the lead in the gasoline if there was a layer of water just below it as PbI3(s) (lead (III) iodide) is insoluble in water but soluble in gasoline. The slow accumulation of PbI3 could clog the shit out of the filter, line and carburator as it builds up as it's pretty dense stuff. Most gas pump systems now a days do a pretty good job of filtering out the water and the molarity of lead in modern gasoline is so low any potential precipitate would end up in the filter, become aqueous in newly flowing gas and burn up in the engine.

So, more than likely, they just wasted good antiseptic.

+1 to that, I would confront the bastard and if he knew that your girl was taken then I would beat the piss out of him. But on the other hand if he had no clue then what are you going to do, leave the girl and move on.

I'm pretty sure it takes 2 to tango. Ship the bitch out and shake the guys hand for painting a clear picture sooner than later. Then get a big bottle of his favorite libation and drink, use the iodine on any scrapes you might get from over consumption.

Re: Iodine in the gas tank?

Never heard of the iodine trick. I had a Geo Metro come in one time that had so much sugar run through it that it had a 3 inch long stalagmite hanging down from the throttle body and when cold it would stick the intake valves open. Just about totaled the car.

Re: Iodine in the gas tank?

20 gallons of Mister Clean could stop 20 T-65 to T-72 tanks, or 40 BMP's. Your average auto engine of the 70-80's only needed about a quart. The Ratio's could be changed depending how soon you wanted them to find they had been tapped.

I AGREE !!

the guy should beat the piss out of her and send her packing, and send condolences to the "lover".

Re: Iodine in the gas tank?

I thought "trucker bombs" were the water/soda bottles filled with piss (and sometimes bags of shit) that they throw out the window.
