Later I got to go to Israel a few times (still haven't seen the place... I think the whole country is airports, hotels and conference rooms.) And it was a really cool place. And I really liked the people. Come to admire their underdog status. Lots of hot chicks, in a JAPpy sort of way. They'd all fit in great on Long Island.
Will I make fun of them relentlessly? Well of course!
But I'm rooting for the good guys on this one. And since I was a wee lad just learning about things like Terrorism and "Death to America" chants and Burning American Flags and rescue missions... Iran has NOT been the good guy. Nor has Iraq. And nor have the so-called Palestinians (Philistines) who have spent decades pushing socialism under the guise of Arab Nationalism and become the darlings of lefty college professors and Sean Penn. Who NOONE here likes. Except when they want to side with the homeless goatfuckers.
So I'll agree to disagree with those who think otherwise. Respectfully. They are entitled to the opinions that folks have had for 3500 years. Whatever. Not losing friendships over. But noones going change my mind (only the Red Sea Pedestrians can do that)... and I won't change theirs.

IIRC, Iran hates us because we supported the Shah and trained Savak... which was one of the most ruthless secret police organizations in the world at the time.
And when the Shah fled (with the treasury), we ultimately gave him asylum (to get medical care for his terminal cancer) and would not return him to Iran for execution.
Not to mention deposing Mosaddegh in 1953 under Eisenhower, because he was a socialist bent on putting Iran into the Soviet sphere (they share a border)... and putting western Oil at risk. So Mosaddegh, who was elected and very popular with the Iranian people... had to go. The US orchestrated the coup with the UK and put Shah Reza Pahlavi in power. The Shah was America's 'policeman' in the area and we loaded the country with weapons and assistance so he could be the 'big dog' in the neighborhood as an American supplicant. The Iranians never forgot that.
The Shah also Westernized the country, which really pissed off the Mullah class. Among them was Khomeni who was persecuted, jailed and ultimately banished to France where he continued to resist the Shah. Who used 'new media' in the form of cassette tapes to send sermons and pretty inflammatory material into Iran. The reaction by the Shah was continued repression of any resistance through his SAVAK. To the point that it was a police state that was heavily supported by the Nixon Admin and Kissinger (who had their hands full with Vietnam). But everyone knew that the US was supporting him and SAVAK.
Carter's arrival and his human rights agenda cut off a lot of support for the Shah and SAVAK. And when the Shah was beginning to die of cancer, the mullah's sensed their chance. The Shah was not able to maintain power... And went, IIRC, to Mexico to get cancer treatment. But Carter let him into the US after the revolution.
We also froze their funds, embargo'd them and made them enemy number one. While they made us the Great Satan... not over Israel (that came later). But over our providing support for a repressive regime and toppling their democratically-elected socialist Prime Minister... replacing him with a King who repressed their religion (and spent lavishly on himself while poverty reigned in the streets.)
So our support for Israel is, historically, not at the root of Iran's hatred for us. But its become a reason.
I can provide a bibliography if you like! The one I'd suggest starting with is Daniel Yergin's "The Prize" because it was all about oil... and that's what The Prize was all about! Great book... reads like a thriller! It's all real!

That doesn't matter. 20% of the world's oil goes through the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran produces 4.5% of the world's oil. That might not seem like much, but if Iran starts mining the strait and their production is offline, then oil will go through the roof. We'll be paying over $ 5 per gallon..

Youre points are valid, Oil is certainly a huge factor, or was, but I dont see that as the crux of the problem at least not at this point. The real problem lies in conflicting religions. The Zionists have mis used the Torah to justify their crimes, stolen land, and abused a whole group of people. The Iranians see it as necessary to their religion to eliminate Israel and Palestine is a s good an excuse as any. Religions have caused at least as much turmoil than politics. People go fucking insane with religion. Christianity has been sucked into a lie, and here we are.
Only two nations could potentially stop a blockade of Iran - Russia and/or China. That becomes more of a question of "will" than "capability".

I think that’s a low number on gas. It will also tank economies worldwide. Iran has more cards to play than most want to recognize. And Yemen will also get involved with closing it down. It isn’t just missiles, they could also scuttle ships that would take months to clear for safe passage. Add in mines, EW and missiles to the scuttled ships and it becomes a shit storm. This has real implications on Trump’s economic agenda as well as the mid term elections, especially since so many in the US are against US involvement.
Word is that Iran hit the Tel Aviv stock market. It seems they may be moving to striking the economically strategic pillars of Israel now. That in combination with refineries and desalination plants would cause internal friction for Israel’s leadership.
