Lets see your USMC M40-M40A6!!!

I took mine to Santa Margarita Gun Club's NRA LR match on MCB Camp Pendleton.

Nice to see the A6 being used. The M40 carries on.

It seemed from the reports of the arrival of the .300WM the M40 line was dead.

@Defender3,

Not yet Sir. Isn't it a bitch to get on base with a firearm? I've been out 3 years now so I don't know how I'd be able to get in..

They started using DBIDS so you have to fill out a form, wait about 2-weeks for them to check you, then you have to go to the DBIDS office on base to get an access card good for a year. It's a PITA, but so far, 512 associate club members have gone through the process.

Yes Sir! M40 is still alive and well. My friend told me they still haven’t get the Mk13 Mod7 at the school house yet and as far as I know they will keep running the A6; if not in combat then in training because the barrel life is so much longer than 300WM.

Sir,

Is the form available online? I’m in Richmond and driving up to Quantico and back for a form is a hassle haha.

They are going to gear up for the last war and than when they end up in a Deciduos/Coniferous/Jungle/Urban environment the whining about the big, long, recoil inducing, big signature .300 WM will begin.

Why does it have to be one club in the bag.

The A6 shouldnt be "just a school" gun.

It should be a readily available option.

It sure is, go here:

I've tried to like it but the dicks on hand guard ruined it for me ?

Lol, no fan of the dickmod system either...I’ve read somewhere that the Mod 7 may not be around long as the MRAD (no dickmod) may be on its way to the fleet....you/your buddy hear anything of the sort?

Hahah we have heard that the MRAD will replaced all Mk13 within SOCOM and USMC at some point. When? We don't know.

Well at least the Mod 7’s dicks are all pointed down range whereas with HK rifles, the dicks pointed at the operator...I think the army saw that and quickly went to MLOK. MRAD would have already arrived if AI was like HK in that regard.

I may be wrong but didnt they just recently (last 3ish years) announce they were providing MK13s to the rest of USMC and not just SOCOM....and now they are already phasing that out to the MRAD SOCOM and USMC wide?

Im happy for all you guys getting new updated stuff but damn for a branch thats slow to change their weapons regularly they just chewed through some rifles fast lol.

Im more surprised by the adoption of the H&K as the standard Infantrymans rifle.

Makes me wonder if obtaining pistons and cans wasnt the whole reason to make the H&K the replacement for the SAW.

Now I suspect they will actually provide a suitable belt fed to the Fireteam Automatic Rifleman.

Its an M40/A1/A3/A5ish. They way it would have been if I was in charge...

Tough conditions...I was hoping for wind, absolutely dead air containing burnt powder and fog....

Sat on bolt overwatch hoping for my target to appear in the mist. Took pics when I realized it was going to be hopeless for a period of time....

I was shooting Marcus Luttrell "Team Never Quit Ammo" - 175 SMK, FC 12.

a1ish6.jpg

Got off 6 rounds before I decided I wasnt going to spend all afternoon taking one shot every 5-10 minutes.

a1ish7.jpg

Ill take that based on conditions - Good training if ever in northern Europe. Doesnt help that leaving the targets in my truck degraded the printing as the papers rubbed together.

From target to bench.....

Better weather allowed me to burn the last 15 rounds of Team Never Quit 175SMK through my A1ish.....

Just picked up a 80% finished stock off ebay yesterday for my 6 digit. Just need a redfield for my m40. Found a douglass for dirt cheap.

Wood is getting hard to find these days.

That stock Im working on came off Ebay. Someone else spoke to the seller to see if they can get him to repro M40 wood.

The comb is wrong for an M40, the cheek pad doesnt rise high enough and it came with a flat plastic butt plate.

Did you buy the 80 percent ADL that was on Ebay cheap?

Was thinking this 700P would be an easy way to pursue an M40 clone.......

Guys at M40.com dont think its a deal.

Ive been trying to get one 16601 butt plate perfect now for about a week. Not having to strip RKW and remove checkering, sell that scope to recoup some money, round the nose of that wood - $1200 dont look so bad.

Yea if i didn't just buy that 6 digit id have offered him something for that 700p. Woulda saved me a lot of work.

Yes i got the unfinished adl for $67. Figured its rough enough to get the shape i want and finished enough i won't pull my hair out. Its either that or stripping and undoing checkering...or $600 for a taylor.

Kyles stocks are beautiful.

The prices are getting up there but Im getting an appreciation for the work he puts into them..

Ive got the 16601 BP within a few C-hairs to fitting the wood next will be handfiling the aluminum edge to meet the wood before bedding it with JB Weld.

Next it will be install reinforcing pin, install swivels, install bipod rail......

Get all that done than I will be linseed oiling it for months.

Keep us updated on your 40 build. That ADL stock looked like a diamond in the rough.

Some more M40 at 300.

Cheated today by using a 1.4 holdover point on my target....

Going for another build soon.

It will be an M40 updated with DBM and a heavier barrel 1:8 left hand twist Bartlein. Walnut it will ride is a really nice striped product. Should look good.

Couple from our season finale. Took 2nd for the season and it unfortunately came down to one stage that made the difference. Was a holdover only stage and the past 2 stages i was a smidge high. My head was too into correcting the too high part and instead of just lowering my hold i instinctively took .1 out of my turret after my first shot and DQed the stage. Was pretty demoralizing but got my crap together the rest of the day. Hurt a 2nd time when less than 5 hits lost me the season. Addicted to shooting clones though now....i take shooting Tac seriously ?

Congrats on being in the circle.

My wife would kill me if I was bringing home big trophies like that.

What's the hooded jacket? Looks Functional.

Thanks bud lol. Wife was giving me some eyes squeezing it into our shelf for sure. Told me when we move i better have a workshop big enough for all my crap....win win ?‍♂️

Hooded jacket was from my airsoft days before i could afford real stuff and enjoy them in a non commie state. Some clone jacket of i think a soft shell pcu? Suprisingly has held up well and is water proof over the last 8ish years.

Exactly. To ensure you are indeed at 4.5x, mark off 2 mils on a target, and zoom down until the 2 mils fits in the 1 mil exactly. Mark that spot on your scope with a marker pen.

DT

Tried this today with my .223 M40....

First with the scope at 9X I checked my cold bore and zero.....

P1019077.JPG
P1019078.JPG

Disregard that I missed numbering one of my holdover shots.....It seems the zero elevation is within a tenth of a mil. My sucky skills account for lateral errors.

Next I dialed the mag back so that the "1 mil @ 100 yards" bar on the left side of the target covered .5 mils as best as I could estimate it.

Took some more series of shots.......

P1019079.JPG

P1019080.JPG

P1019081.JPG

P1019082.JPG

Made some more errors in my shot marking and screwed up at least one hold in that exercise but the general idea can be seen. On the last set of shots it seems Im pretty close to being within a tenth mil of doubling the reticle holds.

One issue I seemed to note is that Im thinking the mil dots of the reticle may not be perfectly set one mil apart. The diamond targets are two mils apart and you would assume each mil dot would line up perfectly in its own diamond when observed vertically but I noted that the lines of white around the mil dots were not identical as the dot sat in each diamond. Seems to me the dots are a small amount higher or lower than a perfect 1 mil distance apart.

Wondering if I can better tune the "doubling" magnification point by shooting at 50 yards?

It would be easier to set magnification to have the "1 mil @ 100 yards" span 1 mil at 50 yards which would "double" the value of the mil reticle.

At 9X and using 5 mils on the reticle I should get out to about 600 yards.

Id really only expect to get 700 - 750 yards and hope for consistent hits on greater than MOA steel. Guessing my current setup gives me about 7/10 of elevation error at that distance.

1/10 mil = .36 inches of error at 100 yards.

.36 x 7 = 2.52 inches of error at 700 yards.

That doesnt seem right did I do that math correctly?

Thinking my error gets exponentially bigger over distance and my 1/10 mil error at 100 is easily a miss at 700 yards.

Oh the gun porn......

P1019083.JPG

P1019084.JPG

That art shop cold pressed linseed oil Im using is turning a beautiful mil spec red.

Make up a target for reduced yardage to check your mil dot spacing. I think i made a target up for like 36 or 37yrds. Easier to guage how everything lines up when you can actually see more fine lines.

Wouldn't this target at 50 yards do that?

Reread @D_TROS post and figure I over thought my exercise yesterday.

Rather than trying to use the 1 mil bar and try to make it fit in an estimated .5 mil area to double I should have put my cross hair on any of the inside row of triangle targets to the left than dialed down until my first mil dot right was in the center of one of the triangles to the right.

The triangles are separated at 2 mils horizontally and vertically.......much easier to see a 2 mil measure at 100 yards rather than the 1 mil reference I was trying to use. Super simple to put one mil dot in the center of one triangle and make sure the next mil dot is in the center of an adjacent triangle that is 2 mils away.

I never claimed to be able to see the obvious or simple when I enjoy making things suck for myself.

Next Ill try this with my .308.

Interested to see if I note "error" in placement of the dots in the reticle.

As a side note.......

Liking these targets.

Sig Sauer uses these in their PSR classes and I ordered a bunch from Action Target.

One side is mil and the other is MOA.

Now that I have my brain a bit more engaged Im seeing all sorts of reference to check my scope.

Some of the reference points are separated by 4 mils/100 so I can check to see if I read 2 mils at my doubling magnification.

Looking forward to doing this again.

I feel like the Scarecrow after getting his brain.

Ive posted my pictures in other threads but I'll put them here as well. Got this rifle last year. I'm used to new technology in optics, high magnification, good glass, etc. This rifle has become my favorite though. Something about using 40+ year old technology and knowing what Marines were capable of with these rifles.

I have pulled off some amazing shots with this rifle and scope. Utterly amazing especially since it's with factory ammunition. This is the best I've ever been able to pull. 6 shots at 100 yards using Federal 175gr SMK

I got to start stretching this summer during hunting. This was the first time I took this rifle out to 700 yards.

Winds were being annoying. One moment they would be dead calm, another moment they would start gusting. Where I was ut was only gusting up to 15mph. At the target location though trees were swaying.

Todays effort.....

First check zero at 9X, cold bore plus 4

P1059085.JPG

P1059090.JPG

This .223 shoots well.

Next adjusted my magnification so the 1 mil dot left of center and the 1 mil dot right of center were centered on two targets 4 mils apart.

Fired three to check...

P1059086.JPG

Than using a pasty aiming point at the bottom of the target I fired through the total ten mils of elevation available through the reticle.

Bottom of target...

P1059087.JPG

Moving up by half and full mil dot values....

P1059088.JPG

It seems Im low by .2 mils pretty consistently.

Fired last 6 rounds using center hold, 1 mil and 2mil hold over.

P1059089.JPG

Thinking my first holdover after center, 1 mil, is getting messed up because Im messing up judging the halfway point between the straight line and the radius of the mil dot. Im not adjusting the hold right because the line and the dot radius are more difficult to judge center bewteen.
