Ok guys looking for input on a good quality knife. Right know ive got a good knife for abuse. I have a couple of glock knives for camping and when im out hunting they are tough as hell and cheap that I can abuse the hell out of them and if destroyed or lost no big deal. Im looking for a tactical style do everything knife. Funds are limited, so im looking <$200. Either a medium sized folder or shorter fixed blade like 3.5-4" blade. maybe something with a serated spine. I kno w there are a tone of metal options out there. again this isnt goingto be a knife that sees a ton of abuse and i would like something that will take a really sharp edge. If you guys can narrow down the options that would b great.
thanks

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

Kershaw folder 0350ST with 3 1/4" blade, assisted opener, G10 scales, liner lock, S30V steel and "Diamond Coat" blade coating which has proved very durable so far. If "tactical" means must serve as a fighter, the blade design is not ideal. Has a list of about S150.00 but can be found in the $100.00 range.

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

Believe it or not but the Buck Nighthawk is a great knife!
Don't get the black get the original one. Good steel, tough, sharp, brought one with me as a back up for two Iraq deployments, used it for hunting prior to with camping abuse and such. Its heavy and inexpensive (about $40 last I remember).

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

One of these might fit the bill.

Read up on this guys background. His designs are used to make high end tactical customs by Mercworx. Grayman knives are just basic, tough, real world knives.

I can attest to the quality (and price) of Mercworx and word of mouth that Grayman Knives are the real deal.

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

I looked at the Swamp Rat knives...they are nice. The method for seeing them and ordering them leaves a lot to be desired. I use and really like the Esee Rat knives.

http://www.eseeknives.com/index2.htm

They are very solid, come with a nice sheath system for drop leg, molle attachment or belt and most models can be found in the $100-130 range. I use an RC-3 as a general purpose and skinning knife and just picked up an RC-4 on the Hide to leave on my pack.

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

What are you going to be mainly using it for? There are tasks that should only be done with a fixed blade.. there are some strong folders.. but if you are going to be doing any chopping/prying/plunging.. I'd stick with a fixed blade. For just opening boxes/cement bags stuff like that.. a folder will do just fine. And you can get A LOT for less than $200.

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

FOlder's fold. Sooner or later they fold when you don't want them too. I gave mine to my kid because he could use a good assited blade. I got TOP's Scalpel for small utility chores, and the Dawn Warrior for others. Tough, very robust knives and well within your budget. Screw folders man, especially when you can get a solid blade for a good price

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

switchblade, something ironic about a guy with the screen name switchblade advocating against a folding blade. JK but im really leaning towards fixed blades. the seal pup elite may be a solid choice for the price sub $100 with a kydex sheath sounds great.. puts it right at that price where you would expect a quality knife and if it get destroyed lost or stolen wont be really pissed. my only question is with the thick AUS8 steal can it take a really sharp edge?

If its anything like the Seal Team Elite (it is) it can hold an edge and take a hell of a beating. I got mine laser engraved with my info four years ago and haven't sharpened it more than once. I use it atleast once a day.

Pretty good blade for the money.

Many think the name comes from only carrying that particular knife. The knife in question that earned me the nickname broke when it was removed from an attacker's hand after giving me the scar on my forearm that earned the nickname. I still have the knife and it still had both mine and his blood on it until around 2004 when Panty 6 decided it was ugly and needed to be polished because it looked 'all rusty and stuff'.

I carried a few different folders with my favorite being a smaller Ken Onion assisted opener with a serrated tanto blade that was 'tuned up' by Rod Carabou out in WA. Riki has it now and loves it. Me, I carry my Top's Scalpel for utility stuff mostly. Good handling small sized blade, solid handle, and a full 1/4" thick, just a wicked little knife. I have loved the Top's stuff for a while, but I know as soon as I visit Kim Breed's shop Top's will probably be the girl who was tossed aside for the nicer one. Kim makes these wicked damascus blades

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

I used a SOG SEAL 2000 when I was a Jungle Survival Instructor. As long as you don't pry with the tip it's a great blade. Much firewood was chopped with it and at least one goat and a bunch of chickens were butchered.

It's big enough for the big jobs and will get to the important parts when used in a defensive mode, but the blade profile allows for precision when making traps.

I never broke the tip on mine, but the one time I used it for digging I was constantly worried about it.

You asked:

The OP stated........

Sometimes if you don't understand something, it's a good idea to go back an re-read.

Lots of times what we "intend" and what is "required" are not one and the same. When your only tool is a screwdriver, sometimes you have to pound a nail with it. Adapt and overcome.

Wait till you get into the custom world!!!
I'm looking at getting a hand forged damascus bowie for $1500.

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

wallyworld has the SOG seal pup elite online for like $70. that like $50 less than SOG direct. what do you think volume pricing or a "walmart version"

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

I really like the Benchmade Nimravus. Available in spear-point or tanto, plain or serrated, different handle colors, and can be had for around $150-160 range, depending on which model you like. 154cm is a tool steel made to cut other steels, so it will definitely take and hold a very good edge.
http://www.knifeworks.com/benchmadenimra...softsheath.aspx

Zero Tolerance also makes a pretty very sturdy knife. I have the ZT0200 folder, and it's a lot of knife for the money. S-30V is another very good knife steel with great edge holding ability.

Nothing against the SOG Seal Pup, but I would go with either of the above first.
I really don't know if SOG makes their knives differently for Walmart, and I don't know if you could even find out for sure, but I wouldn't take the chance. Buy a Benchmade or ZT, and you know exactly what you are getting.

Re: Lookiing for the right knife need help

The folder is a Emerson CQC7A, been carrying it daily for nine years, use it every day. Got to respectively disagree with Switchblade in regards to a folder will eventually fold when you don't want it to. I trust the well made liner lock of the Emerson folder. I had the Tanto tip/serrated version of this knife. I sold it, the Tanto tip/chisel grind is not practical for a daily use, sliced poorly.

The fixed is a Fallkniven F1. I believe one of the best values in a fixed blade. It doesn't have the tacti-cool styling of other knives, very well made full-tang knife.

Keep both knives wicked sharp, use an Edge Pro on the Emerson, mouse pad wet/dry sandpaper on the convex edge Fallkniven.

For me, both these knives fit my hand nicely. May not fit yours.
