hey guys, not sure if i am even in the right spot, but here goes anyway. im shooting a springfield m1a national match, with 168gr. match ammo, fixed 10 super sniper scope, and badger ordanance rings off a pro mag scope mount(wich i know isnt a great mount) but it has three anchor point and seems to be very tight. at 100 yrds the bullets are anywhere from 2 inches to 1 foot apart. no matter what ammo i try the problem persists. my question is what you guys think iit may be. im leaning twards the mount. any info woould be very much appreciated. thanks

Re: m1a problem

I assume the groups are appropraite to your ability with iron sights? If the rifle groups with iron sights and the issue only exists when a optic is mounted we can eliminate all the other factors such as operating system components and FH alignment.

Is the movement in POI veritcal or horizontal? I understand that the mount is a 3 point system, but one of those points is a bit loose. The screw that goes in the left side of the receiver goes trough a oversized hole in the mount. Recoil may be moving the mount fore and aft with each shot. If this is the culprit I would expect lateral shifts in the group (assuming SAI got the groove machined straight). Fill in a few more details and maybe some more specific answers can be provided.

Re: m1a problem

well i tried the tilt test and hear nothing i presume the piston is tight, and the hole for the mount on the side of the reciever is over sized. there is a lot of play when the screw is loosened if this is the problem how do i go about fixing it.also the poi is both vertical and horizontal

Re: m1a problem

Is the Pro Mag mount the ARMS #18 copy or the Smith Ent Copy? Ahhh, who cares? My money is on the mount being a POS and moving around. If your rifle groups with iron sights, it will group with a properly mounted optic. Thats the question you forgot to answer. Does it group OK with iron sights?

Re: m1a problem

I'm betting mounts. One way to tell is take the thing off and see how it shoots with the iron sights that God and Springfield Armory met for the rifle.

Re: m1a problem

thanks for all of the input guys, i think ive got it down to the mount. the rifle is unbelievably accurate with iron sights, so i know its not that. and in retrospect the scope sat on my ar10 for about six months without any issues, so it has to be the mount. now that weve nailed the problem down are there any suggestions for a reliable mount that i wont have to put a second mortage on my house to get. oh and no there is no evidence of copper in the suppressor.
