Manners GAT Stocks anyone??

Somewhere down the line, I want to put a slightly heavier barrel on my Howa and drop it into a new stock to build a medium weight/walk about long range/hunting rifle.

I'm considering a Manners GAT as the thumbhole stock appeals, or perhaps something a bit less "tactical" in the form of a MCS-T.

Anybody used either of these stocks or have an opinion? I'm *not* looking for a full on tact-cool build on something like an A5 or the MCS-T5 so please don't recommend those....

Regards,

Peter

Re: Manners GAT Stocks anyone??

I had a GAT stock for a long time and really liked it. I FF'd the new one at SHOT and like it even better. If you like a thumbhole stock, you will not find a better one than a Manners. Even though you're not looking for a "tacticool" build, the T5 is no more tactical than a GAT. A stock is a stock is a stock. I used a GAT for years and loved it.

Mike,

Cheers for that...For what I want, I think the T5 is just a little "bulky" compared to the GAT...

What was thebedding arrangement in yours?

As I want a drop mag, I'm considering the new mini chasis that they are offering, although its not yet in production for the Howa.

Re: Manners GAT Stocks anyone??

Peter,
Mine was just a "standard" bed as it went an 2.5cm or so past the recoil lug.
I saw the mini chassis and was extremely impressed. Any new Manners stock I get will wear one hands down.

Howa's are tough actions to find items for. I know Tom personally though and would think he'll respond to a request for you. It may take a while but he'll get it done.

Mike,

I had an email back from Tom saying their not doing them for the Howa at this time..I gather the issue isn't with the their stocks, but the production of the mini-chasis which is a BO item. Tom did suggest a bottom metal might be available by CDI and said they could intergrate that in to the build.

Need to reconsider my options now and decide whether its worth waiting...

Peter

Re: Manners GAT Stocks anyone??

Peter,
I misspoke and I apologize. It's a difficult situation and your options are limited with an action like a Howa. Not a reflection on its quality but rather its popularity. In my humble opinion I would wait as the Manners is more than worth it. It sounds like that is what you want so why settle for a little less time?

Re: Manners GAT Stocks anyone??

Mike,

You didn't mispeak at all its just Tom doesn't have control over the chasis production.

I'm in no hurry at the minute and I think i will wait, as there is plenty of other kit I need first!

Peter

Re: Manners GAT Stocks anyone??

Pete,
I have a Manners GAT ambidextrous stock on my GAP build and really like it. I am left eye dominant and shoot left handed even though I have a right handed action and set-up. I like being able to manipulate the bolt and load with my right hand while keeping my tigger finger on the left hand available. I thought the quality of the Manners stock is top notch and I get lots of people checking it out at the range. Would recommend them to anyone. Will get a Manners on my next GAP build as well.
Thanks - JaxOps

Re: Manners GAT Stocks anyone??

Pete,

I'm using a couple of GAT stocks as below - the green one is a .223 and the tan one a 6.5 which is using CDi bottom metal and AICS mags.

Both are Devcon bedded using the supplied pillars and I'm sure the CDi Howa metal will be just as good as the Remington version - top notch.

I have enlarged the grip profile on both stocks as I have large hands and they felt a tad skinny for me. I find the stock way more comfortable than an AICS and usable as both an excellent prone/comp stock as well as ensuring a pointable truck/foxing gun without too much bulk.

I tend to need high cheek pieces and I did toy with converting the stocks to adjustable but in the end went with a bolt on riser that is easily removeable for cleaning. You may be happy with the standard height which is decent to start with.

South Yorks Shooting Supplies are carrying Manners stocks in the UK now and Ive also had a couple of exchanges directly with Tom Manners who is a real gent.

Good luck with your decisions.

Thanksfor that...Where did you get the bolt on comb raiser?

It's a cheap item designed for an FN FAL - I reshaped the underside to get the height I wanted then used an epoxy filler to mould it to the exact stock shape.
