Mk 13 Mod 0 stock

Sirhr,

that 16x looks perfect. I need to change over. I assume the scope clears the rail? It looks TIGHT. I love them sitting low like that.

Looking at the old dope chart, I wonder if your guy was a lefty?

Congratulations!!

Nice rifle sirhr! I have to agree with Fatboy, the scope looks rather ~Tight~ to say the least. "All those adjustments and scope won't go up any further?..." lol

Look forward to groups when you get a chance.;)

^^^ You'll have to talk to the man who built it! But, yes, it's very... precisely fitted.

Hey, if it works....

One interesting thing is that the MIRS rail is a 0 down rail. Which on a .300 Win Mag seems crazy! But you have to remember that the Mk 0 was just that... the first of a whole new genre of specialty-built guns. And they learned FAST how to improve them into the new variants. Not sure exactly the year this was introduced... but think about where we were, technologically, in 2001... or 2010.... the whole field has moved light years. Wars do that.

So I have no illusions that this rifle is technologically as advanced as my TRG, for example. But it's a heck of a vintage rifle... with a provenanced original stock and accessories... field used by Naval Special Warfare... reconstructed by the guy who built them new... in the first place. 20 MOA Down? Who cares? It's about as close to the real deal as one can get. And I am going to have a blast shooting it.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Now if I only had a case...

A 20 Moa rail isn't needed with a 140 MOA of internal travel. I would go so far as to say, not even desired. the orginal 700/300 wore a 0 MOA Leupold mk4 base, so the mcCann's taper configuration may have been a carryover, as Leopold still ruled the roost in the mid 90s and the 16x was what the Army guys had until GWAT I think.

Do you have unit markings on the stock? I ask because maybe, just maybe, if you're really lucky, that stock is from an SF or Ranger unit, as they both used them too ;)

Alan Brown said that the MK13's left the shop with Mk4 10x's on them, they only have 90MOA of travel. I'm torn on which to use, I have a 1995 Mk4 10x and a Mil-Spec Nightforce.

if you're actually going to shoot the rifle, go with the NXS.

As for groups... headed to Ft. Campbell in about 10 days to visit with some friends. And plan on shooting some long ranges down there with it. I think we may be able to shoot on Range 16... or maybe even one of the more... secluded spots. None of my brass is fireformed to the rifle yet... so I expect that it will shoot well... but nothing like I expect it will shoot when I get fireformed brass and a load worked up.

As for changing out the scope... no. That's not the point. It shipped with a Leupy. It will shoot with one. Besides, I am a US Optics snob... if it's not going to have a Leupold... it's going to have a USO.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Range 16 goes out to 800, correct?

My 10x started life as a mildot and was converted to TMR

yes, range 16 goes to 800m, and they cleaned the whole thing up. No more tall grass, small trees, etc.

NOTE: you have to register the rifle onto FTCKY before you bring it in. The MPs come and check serials at 16 and if you have a rifle not registered on post I believe you get to take a ride in a police car.

I'm all about paperwork.... and I'll be escorted by 5th Grp. buddies. So I am sure I'll manage to not get a ride in a police car. Besides... I like riding in police cars. Of course, I'm usually driving.

Cheers,

Sirhr

well then, here is a teaser. EOD buddy sent this to me a couple months ago. I can't tell if the bunker is still here. This range used to be totally overgrown. 5th GRP cleaned it up a bunch but left it nasty enough to still look like Europe(only with warmth) MWR took it over and now that shit looks manicured.

Unpacked it this morning... bore sighted it this afternoon. But didn't get a chance to get on paper and dialed in, yet.

Probably next weekend. It's an utter beaut!

BTW, it is a 16X scope. When I brought the parts to Alan he said that there were rifles that left Crane with 16X Leupold's on them. Also that those were used on other rifles (ie. the early Barrett's) and frequently re-purposed as needed.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Forgive me, since this is not exactly on topic, but maybe close enough;

I am in the process of putting a Mark 13 mod5 (ish) build together (as I am in Sweden I have to improvise a bit, I cant get the correct suppressor). However, I bought a MARS rail from Brownells, when Remington sold of some of the stuff they had laying around. But as far as I can figure, the bolts that came with it is the wrong size.
The standard scope base thread size in Remington 700 actions are 6/48" right? A lot of guys have them redrilled and retapped to 8/40", this seems common. But the bolts that came with my MARS rail are either 5/32" or 11/64", I cant tell for sure, but I can tell that they are not 8/40". And I can tell you that there is no way in hell that they fit in the action.

So, it seems in order to get some new bolts?
Have you guys had your actions redrilled and tapped for 8/40" or what bolt size comes with the MIRS rails you use?

Am I missing something here?

My understanding is they re-drilled and tapped the actions to 8-40 as you said.

As far as my measuring skills permit, 8/40" bolts are 5,08mm in diameter?
The ones included with the MARS rail are 4,10 mm in diameter. I guess I will just leave it all to the smith when the time comes to rebarrel and have him figure it out!

So the big day arrived.... out here at Clarksville... and for those familiar with the area... the home of both 5th Group and Jack Hinson... more on that later...

Not able to get on base today... bummer. But went up to an NRA range in Land between the Lakes. Great public range. Empty... except for that one moron who has to come pick brass and then hangs out behind us blabbering on endlessly... for the love of all things holy... go away. But he did, eventually.

Conditions were.... light wind quartering out of the 2-O'Clock but very light. And we were in a big horseshoe berm. Hazy. Thunder brewing to our West. A lot of mirage and churn visible in the scope. But since this was just a first few shots....

Started with 10 rounds of factory, soft point Federal Ammo. Came free with the dies I bought. WalMart stuff, probably. Used it to go from bore sight to 'close' to the dots. It grouped like... WalMart ammo. Then ran a dozen patches with solvent up the bore (these were the first 10 shots)... and a couple of dry patches. And we were ready for the good stuff.' This is handload 220 grain HPBTM. Not a heavy load. But it's to fireform the brass... so again, not expecting great things. I picked this powder charge at random (well, out of a book... but no testing at all.) And brass is FL resized. Next time, it will be neck sized only.

Recoil on the rifle is not only manageable, but it's downright light. None of the 'ferocity' one expects from a .300 WM hunting rifle. Not as tame as the .308 Sako. But really, not a kicker at all. Scope is... everything a 30 year old scope with fine reticle is... which is tough to use. And it's in 1/4 MOA.... and I've been shooting Mil's for 15 years now... so just took some thinking to go back to MOA. Not hard, though. Easier than the other way around.

So I took a go on the bench.... Also not my favorite. Bipod too tall for bench. I had to engineer my scope cover and sock bag to support the rear worth a damn. But got a good weld.

Let go my first 5-shot 100 yard group.... This is it!

32805313_1423539687792674_6904774237492346880_n.jpg

This rifle shoots! And this is with no messing with loads.... a 'testing' and fireforming load only. And that's about a 1/2" group with the one on the left being the cold bore shot after cleaning. Shot a couple more 5 shot groups... and they were about like this!

32866325_1423539634459346_8084490625719730176_n.jpg

Moved out to 200... and group size is about the same MOA... with a called flyer, about 1.5 inches. Without the called flyer, the group's about 1 inch. I shot a few flyers... I just don't like shooting from bench. And this one was all wonky.... seat too low, bipod too high. I should have gotten down on my mat. Next time.

In addition my buddy-since-we-were-teenagers from 5th Grp. MSGT "Bull" (ret) took a go. Loved it... and talked about the ones they inventoried over the years... (a few of you know Bull, I am sure)

32712329_1423539767792666_7296175672328716288_n.jpg

And then.... we were done! A great time was had by all.... but wait....

As we were driving into the Land Between the Lakes.... I saw a small sign on a building and all I could read as we drove by in Bull's truck was "Jack Hinson." Lightbulb went off... The Land Between the Lakes.... USED to be the Land Between the Rivers. During the Civil War. And, indeed, Cadiz and Dover... were where Jack Hinson, the Civil War sniper notched the tang of his custom-made sniper rifle more than 35 times... terrorizing the Union forces on the rivers and on the trails.

A big of Google-Fu to find the marker. And some fast photography by the roadside. And Bull and I have a couple of awesome pictures!

32844711_1423539674459342_5404839407096168448_n.jpg

The range we were using was just 2 miles from the Historical Marker placed here for Jack Hinson. And in the heart of the country stalked by one of the most successful snipers ever! The book "One Man's War" which, I think, Maggot told me about, is a magnificent read. And it was written by a Marine Corps officer who stumbled on this marker... and was so interested by it that he researched and wrote one of the best books ever-written about early snipercraft. IMHO, a must-read for SH members.

Anyway, can't think of a more worthy place, time (or company) to break in the Mk 13. It's on the way home now in my back seat..... ready to start ringing steel back at Schloss Nitrocellulose. And, boy, does it shoot!!!!

Cheers,

Sirhr

That's my kind of "review".

Took mine out again yesterday. 87°, light wind with variable clouds. Wanted to compare my 230 OTMs against a 210SMK load I am developing and finally soke 248mod1. Shot mostly at 1k. But verified by 600 and 1250y dope.

The 230s and 210s had the same POI (210s in virgin brass) basically the same group size on an IPSC. When I was satisfied that I was holding MOA I just loaded up four of the mod1s and let get go. 4 shots, 9" above the 230/210 group with about 1" of verticle and 8" of horizontal. These things held amazing elevation. The down side, all 10 pieces of brass are toast. Every one of them flowed into the ejector hole.

For a fire and forget, the 248mod1 is awesome.

BTW, according to Alan Brown, he has a complete stock, furniture and barrel set at his shop that he has been 'hoarding.' And if anyone wants him to build a rifle... He has everything you need. Get in touch to get the process started.

If I were one of you guys wanting one of these rifles.... I'd be on that like a Hobo on a Ham Sandwich!

Nice to hear your rifle shot well, Fatboy. But having the brass flowing.... that sounds like too hot a load? Or some kind of issue. My brass came out absolutely perfect and ready for re-reloading. All fire formed and stuff!

Now if I could just get a case.... Just 'sayin.

Cheers,

Sirhr

Only brass that flowed is the factory M248mod1. I suspect it will flow in just about any chamber. It is super hot.

Hi - new guy here. I’m about to start on a Mod 0 build and I’m trying to find the actual specs for the A2 stock. I’d love to get s return stock for my build but I just seem to have bad timing in terms of missing ones that come up for sale. So, I was thinking about reaching out to McMillan and ordering a new one but I can’t seem to find the details on the barrel channel and recoil lug dimensions. I did some searching here but didn’t find anything. Can anyone point me in the right direction or provide the specs?

Meanwhile, I busy trying to track down the MIRS rail and recoil lug which seem to be part of the challenge for this project

call McMillan and ask about the A2s for the Crane Mk13s with the 3rd action screw for the recoil lug. They have the spec, but they will still ask you all the questions and make you verify the order sheet. I think Charles? may have helped when the lady taking my order wasn't sure. He pulled up the file and the CNC program was still there. It was a smooth, trouble free order.

Thanks - I'll give McMillan a call. Just curious - What was the lead time when you placed your order?

IIRC, about 6 months and it came in 4.5 months.

Jab00 Shoot USMCSGT0331 a pm. I think he might still be able to fix you up with a return stock and rail. You can find his post early on in this thread and just click on his name and then select send private message.

Thanks - I’ll find his post and take a look at it as well as shoot him a PM as well. The more I research this build I’m realizing that it’s going to be more of a marathon than a sprint in terms of sourcing components. I’m combing through the web just about everywhere as well looking for a MIRS Rail but no luck so far.

Look at the picture in this WTS listing in the optics section....

https://www.snipershide.com/shootin...optics-heavy-short-range-and-red-dot.6888986/

anything of interest to you there?

Perhaps he has more than optics to sell.

They are hard to find. Maybe and just maybe USMCSGT0331 might have a return rail as well.

Thanks - i just sent USMCSGT a PM. I saw his username come up while I was searching eBay for return stock kits but he didn't have anything listed.

Alan brown has a complete set ready to build around your action and barrel. He had it about 3 weeks ago unless someone snapped it up already. Cheers, Sirhr

Thanks. I'll reach out to him. I'm using my guy for this build but I'm hoping that he (Alan) may be willing to sell me some parts.

Have Alan build it for you... the value of having the guy who built the originals... build yours... priceless!

And he'es no more expensive than most custom 'Smiths... and knows more than any local shop.

When you can get 'the guy' who built the originals... to build your new one? Well, it's like having Carroll Shelby build your Cobra... vs.. having the guys at Mr. Goodwrench do it for you. The quality may be the same... but don't you want 'the guy' to do it?

Cheers,

Sirhr

I have an extra MIRS. It is the zero moa version and is a return mirs that came from a retired Seal. My other one is in AJ Brown's shop. If you do a build... and need a mirs let me know.

I made two big steps forward in my Mod 0 project this week. The biggest one was getting an awesome looking return stock kit from USMCSGT0331(which should hopefully be arriving today) and I got my barrel order placed with Lilja. I've already got my receiver, so I should be good to once my barrel arrives (the lead time is 12 weeks, so I'm looking at early September). The plan for now is to use this down time to track down the scope and rings.

One Question: I'm in NJ, so a supressor isn't an option, but I still want to have the notches milled into the barrel to keep my build as accurate as possible. I haven't been able to find a decent picture of the muzzle end of Mod 0 barrel that has the notches but without the KAC attached. Could someone please post a picture without the can or provide a link to one?

The Mod0 didn't use a QD suppressor. No pin notches required. They added a "doughnut" to attach that can down the road, but I think that was a mod3... edit. (mod1)

Post pics of the stock when it lands

What scope and rings do you want?

My kit arrived about 10 mins ago. I actually had to chase the mail truck down the road because I missed the guy at my door (he must knock like a mouse and I unexpectedly received a "sorry we missed you" text from the USPS tracking system). Anyway, I don't think that I've run that fast in about 10 years and I'm pretty sure that I may have pulled a hamstring in the process.

The stock looks incredible and I couldn't be happier with the kit in general. I just have to track down some 8-40 screws for the MIRS. I'll post pictures when I log back into the forum on my phone.

In terms of the scope and rings, I was going to try to track down a Nightforce 5.5x22x56mm NXS and a set of "high" NF rings (saw this info on the "MK13 Mod 0 Info Thread" page here. I'm presuming that this is the correct scope. I've been searching around the WTS listings here but haven't found anything yet.

Amazon has the NXS 5.5x22 for roughly $2000 right now. Part number C434.
