My God. Instant flashback. One of my last cases at a certain west Texas ER was a mass casualty situation (6 patients is mass casualty if there is only one provider and one nurse). A couple of floor nurses came in, so I directed them to the least injured, then two nurses from Admin came in, and when directed to do an assessment, and take care of what needs doing, they just stood there, while I resuscitated one, and stabilized another, and while my good ER nurse was taking care of multiple fractures and assorted issues on another. When I could come do a second assessment, no IV's started, no splint on the fractured arm. No O2, no exam for other injuries. A paramedic came in from the ambulance, and I used him to start the IV, order the xrays and apply the splints while I examined everything else and gave her some morphine for the pain. I turned to the two nurses who had still not done a damn thing, and told them they were worthless. They complained. so I showed up at the Admin's office with the ER Nurse and the Paramedic.
Expect worse. I got out of the industry when it got apparent that Admins were going to make all the decisions.
