I have a friend wanting to buy a .308 bolt gun for his son's 15th bday next Tuesday and wants to stay under $400 if possible. He would also like it to be a combo rifle. I've found a Mossberg 4x4 at around $380 and a Remington 770 SPT for $306 on buds gun shop. Are either of these worth their weight? Any recommendations for these or anything else.

I greatly appreciate any help and advice. Thanks

Re: Need help ASAP

Highly recommend he looks at the Stevens 200 series rifles. They are really just plain jane Savages. Lots of aftermarket stuff for them if the boy wants to play around with it later.
Easy to change barrels and calibers, etc.

Yes, they have it in 308 and it comes with a 4-12x40mm scope mounted on it for $350.

Re: Need help ASAP

I assume this will be for hunting at fairly close ranges 100 yards or less? If so I have shot a buddies Savage Axis groups were 2 to 3" with old hunting ammo.

I dont have experience with the one's you listed but if your looking for something that is suitable to 100 yards I would think they would be fine. If your looking for something as a target gun, I'd consider something else and spend a bit more.

By combo I'm assuming you mean scope and rifle as a package? If so you can get the Savage with a scope for $317 http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/70953/Savage+AXIS+XP+308+WSCP

Re: Need help ASAP

i would definitely stay away from the Rem770 as that is one of the worst guns they ever put their name on!
the mossberg i don't know about.

Bud's has got the Savage model 11 for around $360 or so and they are really great rifles. the one i was looking at has the accu-trigger as well.
i don't think you would be disappointed in it.

Check it out http://www.impactguns.com/ruger-american-rifle-308-22in-black-6903-736676069033.aspx </div></div>

This month's American Rifleman (NRA magazine) did a review on the Ruger American.
I was not impressed with the accuracy. Off the top of my head, averaging 1.5". But, for a strictly hunting rifle at short to mid distances, that will get the job done.

+1 on this. don't get the savage axis edge though since they are not as easily upgradable.
