Hey all, i'm really at stand-still as far as which optic to go with for my upcoming build and i'm looking for some good input. Here's the situation:

I built two Rem 700 2 years ago, both were tack drivers for a low-cost rifle (AAC-SD and SPS-V). I had to sell them both due some money crisis but after working things out i'm finally ready to build another one. I'm going to be building a Remington 700 SPS-V (26" .308) but can NOT for the life of me decide which glass to go with. My Budget for Scope/Base/Rings is about $1200. I'm going to be shooting honestly around maybe 650 yards max (MAYBE one 1000 yard trip).

Now i know it's not a insanely good price point but I gotta stay within a budget. What my two options currently are:

Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 OR Leupold MK4 (used they can be had for about 900 in excellent condition)

Now currently the Viper with shipping and accessories comes to $1200 with the following:

Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50
Seekins 20MOA Base
Seekins Low Rings
Vortex Bubble Level

Now at this point I've come across multiple MK4's going for ~8-900 used in excellent condition. So my main question is at this price point if you could get the Leupold for about the same price as the Vortex, which would you guys choose in your opinions?

Thanks for any input you guys can give me.

I'ts been a long time since I looked through a Mk4, but I got a Vortex Viper HS-LR 4-16x for my girlfriends 700 SPS .223. I took the Vortex off and plan on taking it back but just because it's too much scope for her. The glass on it was blazing and the turrets felt good. Although it wasn't the PST line, it's the same glass and the only difference was no illum (according to vortex). I really liked that scope, and I'll tell you something else, when I was at the gun store buying it I called Vortex to ask them how tall of rings I needed to clear the barrel on a 30mm tube and someone jumped right on the phone and helped me out, outstanding CS.

To me, the distinct advantages of the Vortex are first focal plane, and mil/mil. The used Leupy's you are likely to encounter are going to be mil reticle with moa clicks, and 2nd focal plane. Glass is going to be close, with the edge going to vortex if you ask most guys who have compared the two. Better customer service, better reticle, illumination and zero stop... To me it is a way better value. They days of Leupold being king of the hill have been over for a while now, and they will be playing catch up for a while yet.
