Sidearms & Scatterguns Picked up a new ESEE-5 today

I've never really been a "knife guy". I've always owned a couple but never took the time to educate myself about the materials or construction. I've read a lot of guys talking about ESEE knives and the reviews have always been positive so I decided to pick one up.

I bought it yesterday afternoon and took it to my part time job where I promptly chopped down a couple of small trees (1"-2" dia) with it before snapping that pic with my cell phone. I fooled around with it after that and it will still slice paper smooth and easy. I'm pretty impressed and for the money it seems like it'll be a real workhorse.

The Esse 5 is a beast.now your bit your gonna need a junglas to hang out with your 5.

Definately a knife a guy would have to try like hell and probably fail to break. Mine sits in the safe more than it should as I feel better about trashing my BK2 ESEE makes great knives, and Mike and Jeff are a couple of great guys.

Esee Knives are awesome.

I've got an ESEE-3 and 4. The 3 sits either in my truck or on my belt and the 4 stays in my day bag. they're easy to get razor sharp and they keep a decent edge. Just keep them oiled.

I'd say there is some truth to that. I've thought about trying to make a knife for a few years now. After I bought the ESEE I decided to give it a shot.

Started with an old file, annealed it, ground the basic shape with a bench grinder then went to work with the files.

Got the basic shape down

Made some ghetto micarta

Made some pins out of an old brass punch

Fitted it all together

Heat treated and coated the blade, finished shaping the handle and ended up with one crooked ass grind, lol

It sharpened up ok but I'll take more time on the next go around. It was fun and I learned a few things along the way.

I like it, it has some character!
