Hej All,

I'm looking for a convenient set up for ruck training, and it seems stupid to pay the equivalent for the GoRuck vest or APC when I could get something which could also perform its intended purpose if I picked up some plates.

Is there a carrier y'all would recommend that is particularly comfortable, even just over a T-shirt or tank? I think the heaviest I would go with it would be 40 pounds, and I assume any of the well made stuff could handle that.

Thanks in advance.

The benefit of a Goruck (or any) pack is you can wear it anywhere without getting the PD called on you.

In many cases not a big deal, but you have an opportunity to spend more time under weight if using a pack.

Smart idea to invest in a carrier that you are actually using for the job. Too many people get caught up in the social media ads seeing guys wearing the mock training vests and takes money away from building their actual kit.

A few carriers I would recommend from experience would be the Ferro Slickster or Crye JPC 2.0. Both of these carriers are built to survive some shit and keep a low profile, minimalist design. Both are great lightweight options as well. I also liked the TREX ARMS AC1 the few times I used one but I won’t support their company anymore

I just bought a cheap amazon vest and had four 1/4" AR500 plates made for it. Functions as "defacto" armor in a pinch, but I just wear it as a weight training vest.

I use adjustable weight vests. Easier to tailor to the workout. I use the MIR version. I had steel weights from a cheap golds gym walmart vest and just moved them over to the better vest. These can be found cheaper.

Please don't ruck while wearing armor and/or a plate carrier.

I spent an entire military career under the green tick and dome of obedience and can think of nothing worse for your back, hips, knees, and ankles (let alone controlling your core body temperature) than cross-country walkabout with added self-imposed physiological stress.

Backpacking or Volksmarching for fitness is NOT rucking in military loadout.

Happy wandering.

Take a look at the outdoorsmans atlas trainer, works really well and doublles as a meat hauler. Also picks up chicks when you slap a 45 on and hit the stair climber. They also make roto pack water carriers so you can haul heavy up and come down cooled off and light so the knees last longer

Each of my plates is 7 lbs 11.3 oz.
X 4 puts it a sliver over 30bs of steel.

Plus the vest. But you CAN run 3 plates in front and 3 in back if you wanna go bananas.

That would be +46 lbs plus the vest

If I were you, carrying ~40 lb and wanting day-to-day ruck training + the potential to throw in plates, I’d probably go with the Agilite K19 or Goruck RPC. The adjustability and shoulder/back padding make the load feel less punishing, especially over longer routes.
