Many years ago, I was given this watch by the father of an ex and am now wondering what it's worth and if anybody on here has any idea as jewelers I've taken it to have always quoted me a value and then offered to buy it which doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in their valuations.

I know it's an 1885/6 Waltham with a ceramic face, perfect crystal, ruby movements and is 18kt gold with an solid 18kt gold chain and is pretty heavy compared to other pocket watches I've held but I don't know anything else other then that.

Here's a few pics.

Re: Pocket Watch experts? Gold 1886 Waltham

i can't tell from the pictures but it looks like a standard 15 jewel gilt movement by ruby i guess you mean the jewels which are in the vast majority movements man made, they are the bushings that the pivot pins rotate against if the case is in fact 18k it would be unusual and rare as most of the solid gold cases have long ago been melted. can you tell me the exact markings on the case also the serial number on the movement and i may be able to look up some info on it.
I guess basically what i am trying to tell you is the value of the watch is in the gold content of the case.

my picture's don't open up all the way for some reason

I sent you a PM with the serial number and the marking on the case say:

PAT.AP<span style="text-decoration: underline">L</span> 22.79
C.W.C.CO.
TRADE MARK (with a moon symbol)
124974

Then there are a handful of little hand written numbers all over the inside of the case that are less than a mm tall. The back has some kind of flower design on it. I know that the man who gave it to me collected pocket watches and often replaced parts here and there so this might be a Frankenstein of sorts.

This site had a lot of info but nothing that made any sense to me: http://www.nawcc-info.org/WalthamDB/LookupSN.asp
