Folks,

looking at putting together one of the above. There are MANY advantages for .308, magazine availability, match loads etc.

I own a .223 AI and 6.5x47 heavy jobbies in the smaller cals and before my bigger rigs I was looking at either .308 or 30/06.

I have a soft spot for 30/06 but the .308 is SOOOO convenient and practical.

I know 7mm is better but I just like .30 cal

Have others gone through this choice ?

Shooting Vermin.....feral hogs etc. and as a heavy hitter for spotlighting. Ringing steel is for me simply preperation for shooting game.

I have a 30/06 brass etc.

I have a light .308, good dies (Redding comp) and plenty of good factory ammo for .308 as well.

So I am set up for both cals.

I have enough .308 mags etc.

On the bigger end I have a .338 Norma Mag. Its a heavy beast.

also have a .300 winnie in the works, little heavier than sporter weight.

.308 reeks practicality !!!!!

-06, better ballistics approaching 300WIN Mag yet not a barrel burner. Its a simple choice, and I have never regretted going -06 over 308.

If you are getting a 300 winnie soon, then why replicating a slighly less oomph cartridge? I would then go with the 308.

Thats the thing,

.308 makes a lot of sense. The .300 is more a hunting style rifle rather than a Heavy Tac Build.

I suppose if I want more than .308 I have .338 Norma Mag....

I like the fact I can buy some off the shelf Match ammo at reasonable cost to shoot too.

The .308 is a direct result of someone way back then figuring out that the 30-06 ballistics could be nearly matched by a smaller and lighter cartridge.
The 30-06 is a classic but for what its worth the .308/7.62 is here to stay in "active duty" for many years to come and that does the trick for me.

Besides my personal opinion is that the 5.56 was developed in an era when the general doctrine was to wound the enemy for multiple reasons, those reasons are no longer as valid as they used to be for several other reasons, and the need for a more powerfull round that will increase the knockdown power and thereby the probability of a first round/burst kill is bringing the .308/7.62 back again as a relevant caliber for personal weapons, not just cs.
Not relevant in any other way than that different times require different ammo, and that 30-06 may be a bit outdated...

Personally, I can cycle any short action without sacrificing my cheek weld. With some long actions, I have to lift my face from the stock between shots. Just another thing to consider.

Download it to duplicate .30-06 performance.

It's not complicated. You'll have both.
