I had to go out and sight in the newly mounted Monarch X 4-16x50 even though today was another windy day. I'm still digging sand out of my eyes and ears but here was my best group.
I only shot 35 rounds today and 10 were to get the scope zeroed.
Overall I'm happy with my progress and very happy with the Nikon. The last 2 shots of the day were damn near same hole at 200.
This rifle is a shooter and I'm working to catch up.

100 yds FGMM 168. I dont have a micrometer but by the ruler its about .442

It's only 3 shots because I'm demonstrating the rifle's capabilities...yeah, that's it.

it clearly states in the rules, no picture posting unless its 5 groups and 5 shots each, next time follow the rules. It doesn't matter on what you opinion is on the 3 shot 5 shot rifle capability debate.
On the other hand nice shooting, but follow the rules next time

Uh Geez, now it's not just 5 shot groups, it's 5 five shot groups.

I dont always shoot for groups. Who is gonna pay for the ammo for this, lol?
Next time I post a pic, I will keep this in mind.

Some of us just like pics!

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

Totally stock.
As for the ruler thing the edges are almost exactly 3/4 inch, I just subtracted 308 from 750, I'm sure that it's not a very accurate way of doing it but best I got for now.

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

oh ok, Im the dumb one, I didnt even think about that. either way, good shooting 3 shot group or not. from a totally stock gun, 2 thumbs up. you should try to bed the action and see if you can tighten em up some more. good job

Yeah, I havent even adjusted the X-mark pro trigger. I'm gonna work on driving it better first. I wanna reach out with this, so eventually a Jewel, a Manners or McMillan stock, bedding are in the plans. First things first ( and funds availability).

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

I know all about funds or lack there of. I have a 700P and I have got the severe itch for a tac ops xray. Im thinking up all kinds of ways to fund this project and thats not even figuring in a scope. I want to fix up my 700P but what I truly want eventually is that tac ops, and I just cant see sinking hundreds or even thousands into this gun when I want to buy a tac ops in the same caliber in the somewhat near future. and after that I'll never shoot my 700P so I think I may just sell it.

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

Nice group! Bedding is cheap but if you are planning on upgrading the stock soon I would hold off as you could easily sell your 5R stock for $200 or more to help fund your new stock.

A trigger is night and day and is the best thing I have done to my 5R. The Jewell HVR is unbelievable.

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

So the aluminum bedding block that hs precision advertises to be so awesome still needs bedded? I would really like to know, as I have 3 of them on various rifles.

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

I have one on my 700P that was around .75moa or so and after I skim bedded it, my last two bullets(after getting back zeroed) were touching. I'm waiting to get some bullets in now to get some more definitive range data. but from what I saw out of that, it definitely made a big difference. soon as the rounds get here I will post some more data

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

Good shooting, that looks promising. I would'nt lose any sleep over posting 3 shot groups.

You will find a few people on this forum that are selective on who they chastise.

If you measure a single bullet hole with calipers, you will find that the hole is not as big as the bullet.
This is because the target paper stretches open as then closes back up as the bullet goes through.
Different paper does this to different amounts.
Basically, to be accurate in measurements, you need to know what a single hole measures and subtract THAT amount from your outside-outside group measurements.

Could someone explain the process of skim bedding?

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

From what I gather it's a very thin bedding coat over your aluminum block. It will cradle the action better than just the block because no 2 actions are exactly alike. It's thin because you don't want the action sticking up out of the stock. Did I get that right?

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

Every rifle I own has been bedded, including my 700 SS 5r. My grandpa got me doing that 20+ years ago. The way I see it, it can't hurt anything, unless you plan on selling the stock.

Can't tell you how my 5R shoots. Still waiting on my S&B 5-25X56 to arrive.

basically you just use the epoxy to fill all the gaps between the action and the stock. as said before it cradles the action better and fills in all around the recoil lug. Do a search and you will see pics and stuff

Re: Range report 700 5R Milspec

Just when I was starting to feel a little encouraged, I see the Les Baer thread. Now, I'm thinking I'll just throw the 5R Milspec in the trash and get me one of them new fangled Les Baers that put them all in the same hole with 10 rounds.

Nah, I'll just wait til Ed Brown comes out with a .308 bolt rifle. Hell, then I wont even need a scope. Just point and shoot.
