We have a few Serbu Super Shorty 870's for ballistic breaching. One of them has started having problems ejecting shells because the brass is hanging up. Upon closer inspection it appears the section where the ejector spring is riveted to has broke off, leaving an edge for the brass to hang on. It is the upper rail and about 1/4" is missing/broke. Is this repairable? I couldn't tell if the ejector base was riveted to the action or if it was milled into the action.

Not the actual shotgun:

Re: Remington 870 Repair

It's not uncommon for 870 to break the ejector spring right at the front rivet hole. Find someone who knows how to fix 870s. Brownells sells a hollow cutter that cuts the "mushroom" off the head of the rivet and the remaining rivet can sometimes be re-used a second time. If not, the entire front rivet needs to be replaced.

If you look closely at the outside of the receiver on the left side, you can usually see the faint outline of the rivet head. Replacing the rivet usually requires refinishing of the receiver if you want the new rivet to be flush and smooth.

Re: Remington 870 Repair

Just had this happen to my 870. It is repairable. I have had well over a million rounds put through my 870,this just broke recently. Sent it to my local 870 guy,he had it done in 2 weeks(waiting on parts from remington) and it was back in business.

Re: Remington 870 Repair

Dave,
It's not the spring tat broke but the raised area the spring is seated in. I am assuming that part may be riveted into the receiver as well.

Thanks Facemelter.

Re: Remington 870 Repair

The square channel that the ejector spring lives in is the ejector and it's riveted to the receiver in two places.

The the rear rivet is for the ejector only. The front rivet has a step or shoulder and is used to secure both the ejector and the ejector spring.

Re: Remington 870 Repair

Sounds like you broke the ejector stop surface itself out. When you have it replaced make sure that it is replaced with the 870 Police ejector- machined steel. NOT an Express ejector-
which is MIM.

Amen to that.
