RIP Pelé

He was the hero of a generation. Even guys like me who were never much into soccer knew of him. In fact, the closest I got to soccer was playing football in 9th grade. In off season, we would play rugby with a soccer ball. No pads. Only rule was you had to kick the ball across the goal line. I nearly broke my hand receiving a blind side tackle (I was carrying the ball.) But that was great fun. I was the tallest kid in school and my jersey number was 72, same as Ed "Too Tall" Jones on my favorite team, the Cowboys. My positions were nose guard and right defensive tackle.

For those of us who played the game, long before it was popular, Pele’s arrival in at the New York Cosmos was a big moment.

I played a bit in high school. Anybody who says Futbol is a girls game is sadly mistaken. :ROFLMAO: I was playing goalie and bent over to save a score. Just as I was picking up the ball a guy blindsided me and kicked it. Broke my left pinky in 3 places and ring finger in two. Still have a bone chip in the pinky and every once in a while bump in the wrong way and it brings me to my knees. Still have some trouble typing.

Played in high school, college, and wanted to play pro ball. But could not find an opportunity. Still a fan, and a supporter of U.S. Soccer at all levels.
